"The Death of Robin Hood" is a somber, reflective thriller that reimagines the legendary outlaw as a ruthless cutthroat burdened by a lifetime of guilt. Directed by Michael Sarnoski and starring Hugh Jackman, it follows an aging, deeply flawed Robin as he wrestles with his legacy while searching for redemption. The film turns the traditional heroic myth on its head by examining what life as a medieval bandit may have truly been like. Rather than a cheerful defender of the poor, it portrays Robin as a harsh figure elevated mainly by popular folklore.

Background

In May 2024, it was announced that a darker take on the Robin Hood legend was in development, with Michael Sarnoski set to write and direct, and Hugh Jackman and Jodie Comer attached to star. Shortly afterward, A24 acquired U.S. distribution rights to the project in a competitive deal at the Marché du Film. In February 2025, Bill Skarsgård, Murray Bartlett, and Noah Jupe joined the cast. Principal photography began in early February 2025 in Northern Ireland. A March 2025 press release from the Northern Ireland Executive Office stated that filming took place at Belfast Harbour Studios and on location at Silent Valley, Glenram, and Murlough Bay, with post-production managed by Yellowmoon in Holywood, County Down. Filming had wrapped by late March. The film was shot on 35mm.
