Overview

Night watchman Mike Schmidt reluctantly takes a job at the abandoned pizzeria Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. He is fired after falsely assaulting a family man, which leads to a custody battle over his little sister Abby, who his Aunt Jane only wants to look after for the money. To escape this, Mike takes a job at Freddy's, hoping to reconstruct the circumstances of his brother Garrett's abduction while he sleeps.

In his dreams, he encounters ghost children and is informed by policewoman Vanessa Shelly about the unsolved murders of children in the pizzeria in the 1980s. When Mike's babysitter Max and accomplices break into the pizzeria to trash it, they are killed by the animatronics that have come to life - Freddy Fazbear, Bonnie, Chica and Foxy.

Mike has to take Abby to work, where she befriends the animatronics. Mike discovers that the mascots are harboring the souls of the murdered children, who keep talking about a "yellow rabbit". Eventually it turns out that career counselor Steve Raglan is actually serial killer William Afton, who murdered the children and controls the animatronics...

Background

Development of the film began back in April 2015, when Warner Bros. Entertainment acquired the rights to the video game series. Initially, Roy Lee, Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg were slated as producers, with Gil Kenan as director and Tyler Burton Smith as screenwriter. However, the project moved to Blumhouse Productions and Jason Blum joined as producer. In February 2018, Chris Columbus was announced as the new director and screenwriter to focus on the first part of the game. However, Scott Cawthon, the creator of the game series, rejected the script, and in October 2022, Emma Tammi was announced as the new director, who wrote the final script together with Cawthon and Seth Cuddeback.

The lead roles were cast with Josh Hutcherson as Mike Schmidt and Matthew Lillard as Steve Raglan / William Afton. Filming began on February 1, 2023 in New Orleans under the working title Bad Cupcake and ended on April 3 of the same year. The music for the film was composed by The Newton Brothers.
