The US science fiction anti-hero film with body horror elements was released in cinemas in 2018. It was directed by Ruben Fleischer and starred Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock / Venom. The film is partly based on the comic stories Venom: Lethal Protector (1993) and Planet of the Symbiotes (1995).

There were already plans for a separate spin-off film about Venom during the making of "The Amazing Spider-Man". In March 2016, Sony commissioned Dante Harper to write a script for the film, which was not to be set in the same film universe as the planned "Spider-Man" film or the "Avengers" films. Alex Kurtzman was originally supposed to direct, but in the end Ruben Fleischer took on this task. Filming began in October 2017 and took place in Atlanta and New York. The film score was composed by Ludwig Göransson.

Reviews of the film were mixed to negative. Only a small number of critics on Rotten Tomatoes were convinced, and the Metascore on Metacritic was also low. However, the dynamic between Eddie Brock and his alien symbiote was often praised. Despite the mixed reviews, Venom was a commercial success and grossed over 856 million US dollars worldwide, making it one of the most successful films of 2018. Venom is the first film to be part of Sony's Spider-Man Universe.
