Following the massive box office success of the first film, which grossed nearly one billion U.S. dollars, the highly anticipated sequel is already in the works. The official title of the sequel is "A Minecraft Movie: Squared," a clever play on words that not only brings the number two into play but also perfectly matches the angular block design of the original game.
Both in front of and behind the camera, the film emphasizes continuity paired with a breath of fresh air: Director Jared Hess returns, as do Jack Black as Steve and Jason Momoa as Garrett "The Garbage Man" Garrison. An absolute highlight is the high-profile new addition to the cast: Hollywood star Kirsten Dunst takes on the role of the iconic character Alex, whom Steve already met in the post-credit scene of the previous film.
In terms of plot, much points to a dark adventure. The first teaser posters, bathed in purple light, strongly suggest that this time the journey will lead to the mysterious "End," where the heroes must face new challenges such as eerie Endermen or even the gigantic Ender Dragon.
