Joey King in talks for A Minecraft Movie 2

Production of "A Minecraft Movie 2" is finally picking up speed – now the first actress has apparently been cast. According to industry insider Daniel Richtman, Joey King is in talks for a role. King gained widespread recognition mainly through the "The Kissing Booth" films. She also appeared in "Bullet Train" and "Slender Man".

Jared Hess, who also directed the first installment, is set to return to direct "A Minecraft Movie 2". The screenplay is by Chris Galletta. In October 2025, the first poster for "Minecraft 2" sparked quite a discussion among fans. It featured a crossed pickaxe and a purple glow in the background. For fans of the game, it was clear that the color was strongly reminiscent of the mysterious realm "The End". In the game, this dimension is home to the legendary Ender Dragon.

There is still no official confirmation of the cast for the sequel. However, we can assume that many familiar faces from the first film will be back. These include Jack Black, Jason Momoa, and Emma Myers, among others. The theatrical release of " A Minecraft Movie 2" is currently scheduled for July 23, 2027.

What is Minecraft 2 about?

The first film adaptation was stuck in development for years and was a real experiment: turning a game with no real plot into a movie. Could it work? But the box office results exceeded even the wildest expectations: Only "Lilo & Stitch" and the Chinese blockbuster "Ne Zha 2" were more successful worldwide in 2025. It was therefore only a matter of time before Minecraft continued.

But what do we already know about the second part? First of all, there are of course the clues from the first film in the form of two post-credit scenes. When Steve returns to his old house at the end, he meets a woman named Alex. Many Minecraft fans know, of course, that Alex is one of the playable characters in the game, just like Steve. Director Jared Hess revealed that Alex will play a central role in the sequel.

"[Alex is, alongside Steve] the other hugely important character in "Minecraft". It's about Steve and Alex, and that's why we'll definitely be bringing them into the game."

The casting of Alex is exciting. In "A Minecraft Movie", the character was played by Alice May Connolly. However, her face was not shown. In the IMDb movie database, Connolly is also listed only as "Alex Double". We therefore think that the role will be filled by a bigger name.

In another post-credit scene, we learn that Marlene, played by Jennifer Coolidge, and Nitwit want to get married. So we can easily imagine a humorous subplot for the sequel that revolves around the wedding of the two. Although nothing else has been revealed about the story of the "Minecraft" sequel, the announcement of part 2 contains a certain hint that has fans already busy speculating.

Minecraft 2 vs. The Simpsons 2: The big cinema event?

We are curious to see how the sequel will fare at the box office: Curiosity about part 1 was naturally huge – but is such hype also possible for a sequel? The release date is also exciting: A new "Simpsons" movie is also scheduled to hit theaters on the same day. The first nicknames for the possible clash are already circulating online: Can we expect the big "Simpscraft" event in 2027?

Let's wait and see: it's not unlikely that one of the two films will be postponed. Unlike "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer", the target audiences for the two films could be too similar. In that case, the films could end up hurting each other rather than benefiting from each other.
