New Stargate Series for Prime Video
Behind the scenes, top professionals are at work
"Stargate" is back! Amazon is working on a new series – with true professionals behind the scenes. This was announced in an exclusive video.
The creative leader will be Martin Gero, a well-known writer from "Stargate SG-1" and "Stargate Atlantis". The original "Stargate" creators, Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, are also returning as producers. They emphasize that this is not a reboot. The series will tell a fresh story that newcomers can also understand.
The 1994 "Stargate" movie earned nearly 200 million US dollars – a huge success at the time. The hit laid the foundation for a long-running franchise that has built up a massive fan base, especially on TV.
The "Stargate" phenomenon: How a science fiction concept became a cult brand
When Roland Emmerich's "Stargate" was released in cinemas in 1994, it was initially impossible to foresee what a long-lasting universe would emerge from this science fiction adventure. Although critics reacted rather cautiously at the time, the film struck a chord with audiences. The concept of a mysterious gateway that can transport people to distant worlds was immediately fascinating. The interplay of archaeological motifs, ancient myths and futuristic technology was an unusual mix that stood out in the science fiction genre.
The film picked up on popular themes of the 1990s, including the question of whether ancient cultures may have been shaped by extraterrestrial influences. This exciting combination of history and speculation made "Stargate" a special experience and laid the foundation for everything that was to follow.
The transition from hit movie to series phenomenon
Although the film was financially successful, it took three years before the first plans for a sequel were realized – not in the form of another cinema film, however, but as a television series. When "Stargate SG-1" started in 1997, the real triumph of the franchise began. The series quickly became a long-running hit and ran for a total of ten seasons, making it one of the most enduring and influential science fiction productions of its time.
It took the basic idea of the movie but expanded the universe enormously, adding new characters, cultures and galactic conflicts. The plot combined military missions with diplomatic challenges while telling stories about personal development, team spirit and moral choices. However, the central idea always remained the same: exploring the unknown through the iconic gateway.
A growing universe full of new worlds
The success of "SG-1" quickly led to the franchise being expanded further. 2004 saw the launch of "Stargate Atlantis", a series that took audiences to a whole new galaxy and introduced a fresh threat. While "SG-1" focused more on military adventures and political themes, "Atlantis" focused on exploration, team dynamics and discovering new cultures. Many fans still appreciate this series as a worthy partner to the original, as it added new facets to the existing universe.
This was followed in 2009 by "Stargate Universe", which took a bolder and darker narrative path. The focus was no longer on episodic adventures, but on an ongoing, more intense storyline that dealt more with human conflicts and complex moral issues. Although the series was only given two seasons, it now enjoys cult status and is considered an underrated but important chapter in the franchise.
Why "Stargate" is still fascinating today
The enduring popularity of "Stargate" cannot be explained by a single reason. Rather, it is the sum of several aspects that make the franchise so unique to this day. The concept of the gate itself allows for an infinite number of stories, as it constantly pushes the boundaries of narrative possibilities. Every new world that is passed through opens up further narrative potential. At the same time, the series achieves something that cannot be taken for granted in science fiction: despite the many conflicts and threats, it conveys a fundamentally optimistic picture of the future.
Humanity grows beyond its borders, works together internationally and continues to develop without losing its moral compass. The characters also make a decisive contribution to the fascination. The development of characters such as Jack O'Neill, Samantha Carter and Rodney McKay gives the franchise an emotional depth that goes far beyond pure action. Their human strengths and weaknesses make the adventures credible and tangible.
The legacy and a look into the future
Even years after the end of the last series, "Stargate" remains present in pop culture. Fans around the world meet at conventions, discuss in forums and maintain extensive fan projects that keep the universe alive. With Amazon's acquisition of the film studio MGM and the recently confirmed development of a new series, the franchise is once again in the spotlight. The prospect of a modern chapter that will both appeal to new viewers and respect the long tradition is sparking new enthusiasm among the fan community.
"Stargate" has long been more than just a science fiction adventure. It is a cultural phenomenon that shows how powerful the human fascination for the unknown can be and how a simple narrative concept can shape an entire generation. Whatever form it returns in, the journey through the gateway will continue to inspire millions of people in the future.
