After a long period of uncertainty, it finally seems to be happening: Filming for "Fast & Furious 11" has apparently begun. Lead actor Vin Diesel announced this on his Instagram account.

In his message, Diesel emphasized that the team is working on a fitting conclusion to the series. At the same time, he thanked the fans for their years of support and patience – both toward the studio and toward the creative team behind the franchise. The production team has been working intensively for several years to put together a "amazing finale". Despite Vin Diesel's extremely positive statements, however, caution is still advised. In the past, there have been several indications that filming was about to begin. An official confirmation, however, has yet to materialize.

The film's direction also hasn't been fully determined yet. It's unclear whether "Fast Forever" will be a direct continuation of previous events or if the plot will take a new direction to wrap up the franchise. The only thing certain so far is that the film aims to return to the series' roots. This means fewer space adventures and more classic street races in Los Angeles. Louis Leterrier will once again take the director's chair; he previously stepped in as a replacement for Justin Lin on the previous film. The theatrical release is scheduled for March 17, 2028.

Who will be the villain in Fast Forever?

The blockbuster series traditionally boasts a massive ensemble cast. And characters who disappear from the scene for a while often make a big comeback a few movies later. One of the most pressing questions for the "Fast & Furious" finale is therefore: Who will take on the role of the antagonist? In "Fast X", Jason Momoa shone as the eccentric villain Dante Reyes and was met with absolute enthusiasm from fans. Nevertheless, his return is up in the air. Persistent rumors suggest that Universal Pictures is seriously considering replacing him with a new villain.

There are two main reasons for this: First, Vin Diesel was reportedly upset that Momoa stole the show from the rest of the cast. After all, internal friction is no rarity in this franchise, as evidenced by the famous conflict between Diesel and Dwayne Johnson. Second, the shrinking budget is forcing the studio to rethink its strategy. Behind the scenes, people are wondering whether the studio can even afford the salary of a superstar like Jason Momoa when it already has to pay top earners like Jason Statham and Dwayne Johnson. However, there has been no official confirmation regarding the cast at this time.

The studio's cost-cutting measures also make another casting wish highly unlikely. In an interview, Vin Diesel threw the name of Oscar winner Robert Downey Jr. into the ring as the new villain. Diesel envisioned him as a wealthy tech billionaire who relies on AI-controlled cars – the perfect counterpart to Dom's strong focus on the human family. However, this idea is likely nothing more than wishful thinking: Downey Jr. is fully committed to the upcoming "Avengers" projects and is certainly anything but a bargain.

Thus, the question of the final antagonist remains completely unresolved. Despite all the speculation, the dramatic cliffhanger at the end of Part 10 strongly suggests that the story surrounding Dante Reyes will continue.

The Return of Paul Walker

In mid-2025, a completely unexpected announcement causes quite a stir. According to Vin Diesel, he made his participation contingent on three strict conditions: the story must return to Los Angeles, there must be a return to street racing, and Dom and Brian O'Conner must be reunited.

The last point, in particular, raises major questions. Paul Walker, who played Brian, tragically died in a car accident in 2013. While his character lives on in the film universe, he has stepped back from the dangerous action. In the seventh installment, he was given a fitting send-off with the help of his brothers Caleb and Cody, as well as elaborate digital effects – a scene that remains the emotional highlight of the series for countless fans to this day.

Exactly how Brian O'Conner will be integrated into "Fast & Furious 11" remains unclear. The most likely scenario is a relatively minor appearance, once again achieved through CGI, body doubles, and perhaps even AI this time around. Whether fans will celebrate such a digital appearance, however, is another matter entirely.

The Fate of Dom Toretto

The all-important question remains, however: What would a definitive finale for the main series actually entail? One specific possibility stands out prominently: Dom Toretto meets his end in "Fast Forever". While this would certainly come as a massive emotional shock, it would also provide a perfectly fitting conclusion. Dom has always risked everything for his family – a heroic exit suits him perfectly. In this way, following the end of Paul Walker's character, Dom's long journey would also find its ultimate conclusion. At the same time, the numerous other characters could still embark on their own adventures – just separate from the main series, much like they did in "Hobbs & Shaw".
