The wait is almost over: Christopher Nolan's action epic "The Odyssey" is set to hit theaters soon. Alongside "Spider-Man: Brand New Day", the adaptation is shaping up to be one of the biggest blockbuster releases of the summer. However, Christopher Nolan may be taking a more hard-edged approach with his next film. According to reports, "The Odyssey" has received an R rating.

For Nolan, an R rating is somewhat unusual – especially for a large-scale summer blockbuster. Given the film's reported production budget of around $250 million, many expected a more commercially friendly PG-13 rating. Movies in this budget range typically aim to attract the broadest possible audience, making an R rating a notable decision.

What does the R rating mean?

One question remains: what prompted the higher rating? After all, Nolan is known for directing PG-13 blockbusters. Before "Oppenheimer," Nolan had only made R-rated films at the beginning of his career. These include "Following," "Memento," and "Insomnia." The classification suggests that "The Odyssey" may be more intense or violent than many initially expected.

Looking at the source material may offer some clues. While many people remember Homer's "Odyssey" primarily as an adventurous journey across the ancient world, the epic poem contains numerous violent encounters, brutal battles, and dark mythological moments. Nolan may have chosen to depict some of these scenes with greater realism and intensity.

An epic runtime

So we can look forward to what awaits us in theaters soon. In any case, we can expect an epic cast as well as an epic runtime. Nolan himself recently confirmed that his latest film is just under three hours long. According to media reports, it runs two hours and 52 minutes. Soon we'll be able to enjoy every second of it on the big screen: The blockbuster's release date has been set for July 17, 2026. You can watch the latest trailer here!

Nolan Brings The Odyssey to the Screen with a Star-Studded Cast

In addition to Christopher Nolan himself, the all-star cast is one of the biggest selling points of "The Odyssey." For the film adaptation of Homer's famous epic, the director has signed on numerous Hollywood stars to portray some of the most famous figures in Greek mythology.

Matt Damon takes on the lead role of Odysseus. The actor has previously collaborated with Nolan on "Interstellar" and "Oppenheimer" and has been one of Hollywood's biggest stars for years. Damon is best known for the "Bourne" series as well as films like "The Martian." As Odysseus, he portrays the legendary king of Ithaca, who, after the Trojan War, must embark on a years-long odyssey to return to his homeland.

Tom Holland plays Telemachus, the son of Odysseus. Holland became known worldwide primarily as Spider-Man. Just a few weeks after the theatrical release of "The Odyssey," he can be seen in the new "Spider-Man" film "Brand New Day." His character, Telemachus, grows up during his father's absence and eventually sets out on a quest to find him.

Anne Hathaway takes on the role of Penelope. The Academy Award winner has previously appeared in Nolan's "The Dark Knight Rises" and "Interstellar." Her best-known films also include "The Devil Wears Prada" and "Les Misérables." Penelope is the wife of Odysseus, who waits for his return for many years and must fend off numerous suitors.

Robert Pattinson plays Antinoos, one of these suitors. Pattinson first made a name for himself with the "Twilight" saga before further proving his acting talent in films like "The Batman" and Nolan's "Tenet." A special challenge awaits Lupita Nyong'o, who takes on two roles. The Academy Award winner from "12 Years a Slave" and the Marvel hit "Black Panther" plays both Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra.

Charlize Theron takes on the role of the nymph Calypso. The actress is known for her roles in "Mad Max: Fury Road" and "Monster," among others. Calypso holds Odysseus captive on her island, thereby delaying his return to Ithaca. Zendaya takes on the role of the goddess Athena. The actress is among the biggest stars of her generation, known for the HBO show "Euphoria" as well as the "Dune" and "Spider-Man" films.

Benny Safdie plays Agamemnon, commander of the Greek forces during the Trojan War. Safdie was most recently seen in "Oppenheimer" and has directed films such as "Uncut Gems" with his brother Josh. Jon Bernthal takes on the role of Menelaus, the King of Sparta and Helen's husband. Bernthal is best known for "The Walking Dead" and the Marvel series "The Punisher."

John Leguizamo plays Eumaeus, Odysseus's loyal swineherd. Himesh Patel portrays Eurylochus, a companion of Odysseus. Patel starred in "Yesterday" and "Station Eleven." Meanwhile, Mia Goth plays Melantho. In recent years, the actress has made a name for herself primarily in horror films such as "X" and "Pearl." Melantho is a servant in Odysseus's palace.

With this mix of established Hollywood stars and younger audience favorites, Nolan brings one of the most famous stories in world literature and Greek mythology to the big screen. For years, the british director has been regarded as one of Hollywood's most influential filmmakers, known for combining ambitious storytelling with large-scale practical filmmaking. His greatest successes include "The Dark Knight" trilogy, "Inception," "Interstellar," "The Prestige," and most recently the Academy Award winning historical film "Oppenheimer."

Given his penchant for grand visuals, practical effects, and epic narratives, many fans see Homer's epic as a template that perfectly suits his directing style. Expectations are correspondingly high for one of the most elaborate film productions of 2026.
