Dexter: Original Sin Canceled, but Dexter: Resurrection Set to Continue

The focus is expected to shift toward Michael C. Hall's Dexter for future projects

Good and bad news for "Dexter" fans: As reported by industry magazine Variety, among others, the prequel series "Dexter: Original Sin" has been canceled. At the same time, Showtime and Paramount are planning to continue the sequel "Dexter: Resurrection".

The cancellation of "Original Sin" comes as quite a surprise. The series was only renewed for a second season a few months ago. The rethink behind the scenes is probably related to the change in management at Paramount. Skydance and Paramount recently merged, which also affected the "Dexter" home Showtime. The portal Deadline describes the cancellation of "Original Sin" as the "first major programming decision" of the new management.

The reasons for the cancellation are probably manifold. Prequels were central under the old Paramount management, which may no longer be the case. According to Deadline's sources, the reasons could also be of a logistical nature. Showrunner Clyde Phillips is in charge of both "Original Sin" and "Resurrection". After work on the prequel was completed, the showrunner shifted his writing staff to "Resurrection".

Dexter: Resurrection Season 2

The overall focus will now be more on "Dexter" projects with series star Michael C. Hall. More specifically, "Dexter: Resurrection". It is planned to commission the writers with the development of season 2 shortly. However, the extension is not yet official. But overall, "Resurrection" is a success for Paramount and Showtime. Both the viewing numbers and the response from critics and fans have been positive. In general, many "Dexter" fans are enthusiastic about the sequel. Like all other series in the franchise, you can stream "Resurrection" on Paramount+.

With the cancellation of "Original Sin", an unloved "Dexter" tradition continues. Both the end of the original series and the final episode of the revival season "Dexter: New Blood" were largely received negatively by viewers. Now "Original Sin" also ends in a way that is unsatisfactory and incomplete. What the cancellation and the change of management at Paramount means for the planned spin-off series about the Trinity killer remains unclear for the time being. However, the franchise focus on Michael C. Hall's Dexter and the possible departure from prequel series make the future of the spin-off appear questionable.

"Dexter: Original Sin" – A look into Dexter's past

With "Original Sin", Showtime ventured a step back into the dark world of Dexter Morgan. The series sheds light on the origins of the later serial killer. At the center is a young Dexter, played by Patrick Gibson, who gains his first experience as a forensic bloodsplatter analyst – and at the same time internalizes the "code" of his adoptive father Harry (played by Christian Slater).

In addition to Gibson and Slater, Molly Brown was also part of the cast as young Debra Morgan. We also get to see other iconic characters from the original series in their younger years. These include Maria LaGuerta (Christina Milian), Vince Masuka (Alex Shimizu) and Angel Batista (James Martinez).

Stylistically, the spin-off is very similar to the parent series. While "New Blood" deliberately dispensed with some typical "Dexter" features, the opposite is attempted here. Once again, the classic "Dexter" music, the main character's inner monologue, black humor, the Miami setting and much more are used.

Dexter: Resurrection

Overall, "Original Sin" was very well received, but it is no comparison to the positive response to "Resurrection". Quite a few fans are of the opinion that the new season even matches the quality of the strong seasons of the original series.

The series is set a few weeks after the events of "New Blood". Dexter is searching for his son Harrison (Jack Alcott), who has moved to New York. At the same time, Dexter's former colleague Angel Batista (David Zayas) is hot on the serial killer's heels.

After not appearing in "New Blood", James Remar is back in "Resurrection" as Dexter's adoptive father Harry. In general, the cast is more than impressive. The cast also includes "Kill Bill" star Uma Thurman, "Game of Thrones" favorite Peter Dinklage and "Jessica Jones" actress Krysten Ritter. You can also look forward to one or two guest appearances from well-known "Dexter" actors.
