Insider Report: Tom Cruise Eyed for New Miami Vice Movie
The superstar could take on an unusual role for him
Is a major casting surprise brewing for the new "Miami Vice" movie? According to Hollywood insider Daniel Richtman, superstar Tom Cruise is being considered for the reboot from "Top Gun: Maverick" director Joseph Kosinski. However, he is not expected to take on either of the two cop roles.
Instead, Cruise could appear as a villain. At least, Richtman reports that he is being eyed for the role. Nothing has been confirmed yet, though: the insider emphasizes that he does not know whether Cruise has even been formally offered the part.
Tom Cruise in Miami Vice?
Kosinski and Cruise have already worked together on "Top Gun: Maverick" and the sci-fi film "Oblivion". "Top Gun" in particular was a huge success and is considered one of the best action films of recent years. It is therefore by no means unrealistic that Cruise could appear in a film by Kosinski.
But it is also a fact that the superstar has not played a supporting role for a long time. And in "Miami Vice", the focus is on the cop duo Sonny Crockett and Rico Tubbs. According to media reports, the two main characters are to be played by Oscar winner Michael B. Jordan ("Sinners") and Austin Butler ("Dune 2").
Tom Cruise in an antagonist role would also be a rarity. In recent years in particular, he has predominantly played classic heroes. But he also embodies morally ambivalent characters from time to time. Among other things, Cruise was seen as a contract killer in Michael Mann's "Collateral". Mann also directed the "Miami Vice" film from 2006 and was also involved in the development of the cult series from the 80s.
The Miami Vice reboot
It is already known that the new "Miami Vice" film will draw inspiration from the pilot episode and the first season of the original series. The main focus will be on corruption and glamor in Miami in the 80s. The screenplay comes from Dan Gilroy, director of "Nightcrawler". Gilroy was recently honored with an Emmy Award for his work on the writing team of the acclaimed "Star Wars" series "Andor".
So even without Cruise, the project would have a top-class cast – both in front of and behind the camera. Cruise would certainly take the star cast to the next level. It remains to be seen whether the rumor will actually come true. One thing is already confirmed: the reboot is set to hit theaters on August 6, 2027.
The cult series Miami Vice
The original series "Miami Vice" from the 80s is still considered an iconic piece of pop culture today. The crime series is characterized by stylish imagery, trend-conscious fashion and distinctive synth-heavy music. At its core were undercover cops Sonny Crockett and Rico Tubbs, navigating both crime and the glamorous nightlife of Miami. With its mix of action, drama and urban lifestyle, "Miami Vice" had a lasting impact on the series landscape and made the characters and their outfits unforgettable.
The Miami Vice movie from 2006
In 2006, Michael Mann dared to make a movie adaptation of the cult series. Starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx, the film picked up on the dark aesthetic of the series, but placed more emphasis on realism and action. Today, the film also enjoys cult status among fans – not least because of Mann's unmistakable staging. Mann deliberately avoided retro charm and glossy aesthetics. Instead, he presented a rougher, more realistic version of the story – cool, stylish and carried by a nocturnal atmosphere.
Hollywood icon Tom Cruise
Tom Cruise has been one of Hollywood's biggest stars for decades and has had a lasting impact on action cinema. His best-known films include classics such as "Top Gun" and the "Mission: Impossible" series, in which he has played the role of secret agent Ethan Hunt since 1996. With a mixture of physical presence and charisma, Cruise has cemented his image as an action star.
After recently ending the "Mission Impossible" series with "The Final Reckoning", the superstar already has his next film in the pipeline. On October 2, 2026, "Digger", by "The Revenant" director Alejandro G. Iñárritu, is set to be released. You can watch the first teaser here.
