More supplies for all "Game of Thrones" fans: While the spin-off "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" is currently celebrating its premiere on HBO Max, new projects from Westeros are already being worked on diligently in the background. Among them: a sequel series and a possible movie about "Aegon's Conquest".

In the summer of 2022, a piece of news caused a stir among fans: HBO was apparently planning a sequel series that would directly follow on from the events of the original series. The focus was on Jon Snow, once again played by Kit Harington. However, the project quietly disappeared from the scene – until now. As the industry magazine The Hollywood Reporter reveals, the early end was due to creative differences. Kit Harington had been working with two writers on a very unconventional concept. Jon Snow was to be shown as a broken man who rejects his direwolf, puts aside his sword Longclaw and leads an isolated life. The story ultimately ended with his death. HBO ultimately decided against it. Reason: too dark!

However, the idea of a sequel is apparently not completely off the table. "Drops of God"-author Quoc Dang Tran is currently working on a completely new approach. One name in particular is repeatedly associated with the project: Arya Stark. At the end of 2024, George R. R. Martin had already indicated that he had met with actress Maisie Williams about a possible project. Insiders also suspect that a new series could be set partly in Essos – a location that would fit in well with Arya's open ending in the original series. The project is still at a very early stage of development. HBO sources say that they are enthusiastic about the idea of a sequel.

Alongside the sequel plans, HBO is also considering other stories from the "Game of Thrones" universe. A film adaptation of "Aegon's Conquest", which takes place around 300 years before the events of "Game of Thrones", sounds particularly ambitious. The bloody rise of the Targaryens is to be told, when Aegon the Conqueror subjugated the Seven Kingdoms with dragons and armies. It is still unclear whether the story will be realized as an HBO series or as a lavishly produced feature film on the scale of "Dune".

Although both projects are still in their infancy, "Game of Thrones" fans will still get their money's worth this year. In addition to the aforementioned prequel "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms"-Kingdom, the third season of "House of the Dragon" also awaits us this year.

What is known about House of the Dragon: Season 3!

One thing is already clear: season 3 will not be long in coming. Showrunner Ryan Condal revealed: "The legendary battle in the Gullet" takes place very shortly after the events of the second season. This battle is considered one of the dramatic highlights of George R. R. Martin's novel "Fire & Blood". The "Gullet" refers to a strategically important strait south of King's Landing. It lies between Dragonstone, Driftmark and the headland of Massie's Hook. This is the site of a bitter and merciless clash between the opposing camps. According to Condal, the production team has invested a lot of time and money to do justice to this epic sea battle.

The civil war escalates: old powers, new leaders

There will also be some changes to the characters. Rhaenyra Targaryen continues to lay claim to the Iron Throne and is preparing to retake King's Landing. Meanwhile, the Greens are preparing to strike back. Ormund Hohenturm, the military leader of his house, plays a central role in the coming war. Daemon Targaryen's story also remains full of mystery: after securing the Riverlands, he meets the mysterious Alys Rivers in Harrenhal – a figure whose true intentions are still hidden.

At the same time, Corly's Velaryon, the legendary "sea serpent", comes more into focus. How he preserves the legacy of his house and what role his illegitimate sons play could be decisive for season 3. And, of course, the unresolved fate of Otto Hohenturm, who was recently disempowered and imprisoned, still hangs over everything.

Familiar stars and a breath of fresh air in the cast

Of course, the popular cast returns: Emma D'Arcy, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke and Rhys Ifans are back. But there are also some new additions to the cast for the third season. These include James Norton as Ormund Hohenturm, while Dan Fogler and Tommy Flanagan go to war as battle-hardened Northmen. Flanagan's Lord Roderick Dustin in particular could become a real fan favorite, according to the makers.

Behind the scenes, everything remains the same: Showrunner Ryan Condal and "Game of Thrones" creator George R.R. Martin will continue to helm the series together. HBO also announced the fourth season, which is expected to premiere in 2028. It will also be the grand finale of the series. There has been much speculation about when the new season will start. Now it's official: Season 3 of "House of the Dragon" is set to premiere in early summer 2026.
