The Cast of Miami Vice '85

In addition to Butler and Jordan, a number of other actors have already been confirmed for the reboot. John Leguizamo is set to play the story's antagonist. Leguizamo most recently drew attention for his performance in Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey"—and is certainly in the running for an Academy Award. His casting in "Miami Vice '85" is particularly special for the actor: Early in his career, Leguizamo appeared in the original tv show.

Alden Ehrenreich, best known as the young Han Solo in "Solo: A Star Wars Story," is also part of the cast of "Miami Vice '85." Whitney Peak, who will soon be seen in "The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping," takes on another role. Another big name is Walton Goggins, known for "Justified" and "Fallout." Also joining the cast are "Moonlight" star André Holland and "The Last of Us" actor Danny Ramirez. The rest of the cast includes Camila Morrone, Andrew Schulz, Edi Gathegi, and Michael Irby.

Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski takes the helm

"Top Gun: Maverick" director Joseph Kosinski will helm "Miami Vice '85." The filmmaker most recently enjoyed great success with "F1." With his "Top Gun" film in 2022, Kosinski proved that he can bring an '80s phenomenon into the present day. The script for "Miami Vice '85" was written by "Nightcrawler" director Dan Gilroy, who won an Emmy Award for his work as a writer on the "Star Wars" series "Andor."

First Details on Miami Vice '85

As the title suggests, "Miami Vice '85" takes us back to the '80s! The reboot is said to be based on the pilot and the first season of the original series. The story focuses on the corruption and glamour of 1980s Miami.

A theatrical release date has already been set—but we'll need to be patient for a little while longer. The film's release was recently pushed back quite a bit. The film was originally scheduled to hit theaters in the fall of 2027—but the new "The Mummy" movie took that slot instead. Now, "Miami Vice '85" will hit the big screen on May 19, 2028.

The Original Miami Vice Series

The story of "Miami Vice" began in 1984 with the eponymous American crime series, which aired for five seasons until 1989. The series centers on the two undercover detectives James "Sonny" Crockett and Ricardo "Rico" Tubbs, who fight drug trafficking, organized crime, and corruption in Miami. Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas portrayed the detective duo.

The series went beyond traditional police procedurals, embracing a trendsetting blend of neon colors, pop music, and stylishly choreographed action sequences. In doing so, it influenced the visual style of numerous crime dramas that followed and established itself as one of the decade's most iconic television phenomena.

The Miami Vice Movie by Michael Mann

In 2006, "Miami Vice" returned with a reimagining for the big screen. It was directed by Michael Mann, who had previously served as an executive producer on the original series. The film starred Colin Farrell as Sonny Crockett and Jamie Foxx as Ricardo Tubbs. Unlike the colorful aesthetic of the 80s series, the film adopted a significantly darker, more realistic look and an atmospheric style.

The plot revolves around an undercover operation against an international drug cartel, in which the two investigators delve deep into the criminal underworld. Although the film received mixed reviews upon its theatrical release, it has evolved into a true cult classic over the years. With "Miami Vice '85," another reimagining is now on the horizon, one that is intended to draw more heavily on the origins of the cult series.
