God of War: Casting Details for Amazon's Series Adaptation
Insider reports a leak of casting calls
New details on the "God of War" series: Hollywood insider Daniel Richtman reports on the casting call for the Amazon production. It contains detailed descriptions for potential actors and central characters – including Kratos and Atreus.
The casting calls include, for example, information on the age and appearance of the actors sought. For Kratos, they are looking for a 40 to 60-year-old actor. Kratos is described as a "war-hardened, muscular figure" who is struggling with "loss and a violent past".
Atreus is to be played by a 9 to 12-year-old boy. The character is described as "intelligent, curious and emotionally neglected". Both lead actors are expected to take part in intense fight scenes and must therefore have certain physical requirements. The ethnicity of the actors is irrelevant. The situation is different for some of the other casting calls. White actors are to be sought for Odin and Baldur.
Code names for the characters were still used in the calls. However, the descriptions strongly suggest that, in addition to Kratos and Atreus, Sif, Odin and Baldur are central to the "God of War" series. They are all listed as "series regulars".
This is already known
According to Richtman, filming of "God of War" is scheduled to start in Vancouver in March 2026. The series is initially adapting the 2018 game of the same name. According to showrunner Ronald D. Moore, the game and series should be similar in tone and not differ too much in terms of plot. However, a 1:1 adaptation is not planned.
The first season is expected to comprise 10 episodes, and a second has already been officially confirmed. If filming starts in March 2026, the "God of War" series could premiere in 2027.
God of War: the iconic game series
From a blood-soaked vendetta to an emotional father-son adventure – and soon on the big series stage. The "God of War" series is one of the most famous and influential action-adventure franchises in video game history. Since its debut in 2005 on the PlayStation 2, the game about the warrior Kratos has become deeply engraved in gaming culture.
Originally rooted in Greek mythology, the series has constantly evolved – narratively, mechanically and aesthetically. The early focus on brutal battles and mythological figures such as Ares or Zeus was supplemented over the years by a more differentiated characterization and narrative depth. The change in the protagonist is particularly striking: from a merciless god of war to a father marked by guilt and responsibility who struggles with his past.
God of War (2018) as a turning point
"God of War", released in 2018, was a radical new beginning that clearly stood out from its predecessor, especially thematically. Kratos now lives a secluded life in the Nordic forests, far away from the Greek world he once destroyed. At his side: his young son Atreus, with whom he must fulfill one last request after the death of his mother – to scatter her ashes from the highest peak of the nine realms. This seemingly simple mission quickly develops into a journey through Midgard, populated by Norse gods, creatures and prophecies.
Central to this is the father-son relationship, which gives the series an unprecedented emotional depth. Atreus is more than just a companion – he becomes a mirror of Kratos' inner conflicts and a catalyst for his personal transformation.
Critics and fans were unanimous: the game set new standards. It won numerous awards and was often praised as a prime example of the further development of an established franchise. The fusion of mythological vastness with an intimate family story was convincing across the board and made "God of War" (2018) something very special for many fans.

The Amazon series
The announced series adaptation now once again underlines the cultural relevance of the series. Despite some changes in the production team and delays, anticipation remains high – not least because the "God of War" series with its dense atmosphere, dramatic conflicts and mythological background is considered a suitable template for a gripping series adaptation. At a time when series adaptations of video games are becoming increasingly successful – think of "The Last of Us" or "Arcane" – "God of War" will be the next step.
