Spider-Woman Film Reportedly Canceled

Will some Sony characters soon be appearing in the MCU?

The "Spider-Woman" film has reportedly been canceled! At least that's what Hollywood insider Daniel Richtman reports. He also has more information on the future of Sony and Marvel.

A Spider-Woman movie has been discussed for several years. In 2020, it was reported that "Don't Worry Darling" director Olivia Wilde would direct the film. In 2023, producer Amy Pascal confirmed that "Spider-Woman" would be coming. After that, however, the project went quiet for a while. The new insider information is therefore not entirely surprising – especially in light of some of Sony's recent projects such as "Kraven the Hunter" or "Madame Web". Both films failed to impress either critics or fans.

The future of Sony and Marvel

But that's not the only news: Richtman also reports on the situation between Marvel and Sony. According to him, the film studio is now generally more open to sharing its characters with Marvel. As a reminder: Sony is behind all the "Spider-Man" films, the "Venom" series and much more. So can we expect to see Spider-Woman in the Marvel Cinematic Universe at some point? Fans will no doubt also be hoping for an MCU appearance by Miles Morales or other characters from the popular "Spider-Verse" films.

The "Spider-Man" series with Tom Holland, on the other hand, will continue on a regular basis. The fourth film "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" will be released on July 31, 2026. Find out all about it in our movie preview!

A look at Brand New Day

What can we expect in Spider-Man 4?

The finale of "No Way Home" creates the ideal conditions for a new start to the series: Doctor Strange's magic has caused the world to forget Peter Parker. "Brand New Day" picks up at precisely this point. The title deliberately refers to the well-known comic story from 2008, in which previous events were reversed – even Peter's marriage to Mary Jane Watson. This narrative reset also opens up new possibilities for fresh encounters or new antagonists in the film.

According to producer Amy Pascal, the plot revolves around Peter's desire to leave his civilian identity behind. He no longer wants to be Peter Parker, but just Spider-Man. The inner conflict between responsibility and personal happiness is likely to form the emotional core of the film. Incidentally, a first teaser for "Brand New Day" has already been leaked online. Find out what you can see in it here.

The cast of Brand New Day

The cast of "Brand New Day" promises a noticeable new beginning – and some top-class names. Tom Holland is joined by numerous new comrades-in-arms. Zendaya and Jacob Batalon are back on board. But other characters in particular are moving more into focus. Probably the biggest sensation: Jon Bernthal returns as Frank Castle aka "The Punisher". After his celebrated appearances in the series, the uncompromising anti-hero is now celebrating his cinema debut in the MCU. How his brutal approach will harmonize with a "Spider-Man" film remains to be seen. Insiders report that Spider-Man and Punisher are initially on opposing sides before they are forced to fight together.

Mark Ruffalo is officially back as the Hulk, but apparently in an altered version. The popular "Smart Hulk" is to be a thing of the past. According to rumors, Bruce Banner is losing control again – with devastating consequences. It is still a secret which character "Stranger Things" star Sadie Sink is playing. However, leaked set photos provide the first clues: Camouflage clothing, heavy boots and a military jacket. Many fans assume that she is playing Rachel Cole-Alves – a soldier who becomes the Punisher's ally after a personal stroke of fate. Others think it is possible that Sink is a new version of Gwen Stacy or Mary Jane Watson. One detail in particular fuels this theory: her striking red hair.

However, Michael Mando's comeback as Mac Gargan alias Scorpion, known from "Spider-Man: Homecoming", has been confirmed. According to insiders, he is not the main antagonist. According Daniel Richtman, Florence Pugh will make a brief appearance as Yelena Belova, presumably in a post-credit scene. There, she is said to approach Peter Parker for the new Avengers. This means that "Brand New Day" would not only usher in a new "Spider-Man" trilogy, but also prepare the transition to the next "Avengers" phase.

The casting of "Severance" star Trammell Tillman has also been confirmed – albeit without any details about his role. Speculation ranges from various villains to Jefferson Davis, the father of Miles Morales.

After "Brand New Day" was shown in cinemas in summer 2026, Marvel fans can of course expect another big highlight in winter: "Avengers: Doomsday". The blockbuster is scheduled to be released on December 18, 2026.
