"Star Wars" is the talk of the town again! According to well-known industry insider MyTimeToShineHello, "Rogue Squadron" could actually be revived. However, not as a movie, but as a series for Disney+.

Originally, "Rouge Squadron" was planned as a major motion picture. At the time, "Wonder Woman" director Patty Jenkins was to direct the movie and stage an action-packed blockbuster about a new generation of starfighter pilots. The movie was even officially scheduled to be released in December 2023. But then the delays piled up. Officially, Jenkins was said to be busy with other projects such as "Cleopatra" and "Wonder Woman 3" – neither of which ever materialized. After several postponements, "Rogue Squadron" was finally shelved. But in early 2024, Jenkins surprised everyone by saying she was working on the film again. Since then, there has been radio silence.

It remains to be seen whether "Rouge Squadron" will actually be released. The main argument against a series production is the high cost factor – the spectacular space battles for which the game of the same name is known would be extremely expensive.

However, new "Star Wars" live-action series are conspicuously quiet at the moment. Officially, only the second season of "Ahsoka" is in the works. However, insiders are certain that Lucasfilm is secretly working on another project – possibly "Rogue Squadron", which could appear as a series on Disney+ in 2027.

"Rogue Squadron" is based on the popular video game series that was released for the PC and Nintendo 64 in 1998. Players take on the role of Luke Skywalker and control legendary spaceships such as the X-Wing. The game impressed at the time with its fast-paced flying action and quickly became a classic that still enjoys cult status today.

The most famous Star Wars video games: a journey through a galaxy full of gaming legends

Hardly any other franchise has shaped pop culture as much as "Star Wars". Since George Lucas' space saga saw the light of day in 1977, it has not only had a significant influence on cinema, but also on the gaming world. In more than four decades, countless "Star Wars" titles have been released – from epic role-playing games to thrilling space battles and family-friendly LEGO adventures. Some of them are now considered true classics. A look at the best-known and most popular "Star Wars" video games shows just how diverse and long-lived this universe is.

Rogue Squadron: Flying for the rebellion

One of the most legendary games of the early "Star Wars" gaming era is without doubt "Star Wars: Rogue Squadron" from 1998. Developed by Factor 5 and published by LucasArts, it put players in the role of Luke Skywalker, who fought as a pilot for the Rebel Alliance in action-packed missions against the Empire. With the X-Wing, the A-Wing or the Y-Wing, players took part in spectacular aerial battles that thrilled with impressive graphics and sound effects.

The authentic atmosphere in particular and the excellent controls for the time made "Rogue Squadron" a milestone. The game was originally released for PC and Nintendo 64 and later received two sequels: "Rogue Leader" (2001) and "Rebel Strike" (2003) for the GameCube. To this day, the series is considered the epitome of "Star Wars" air combat games – and many fans would like to see a modern remake.

Knights of the Old Republic: The role-playing masterpiece

If there is one "Star Wars" game that regularly appears in the lists of the best video games of all time, then it is "Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic" (KOTOR). Developed by Canadian studio BioWare and released in 2003, it is set around 4,000 years before the events of the films – in a completely separate era of the galaxy.

Players take on the role of an anonymous hero who discovers his connection to the Force in the course of the story and can choose between the light and dark side. The moral decisions, the profound plot and the strong character companions made "KOTOR" a role-playing classic. The surprising story twist in particular is considered one of the best in gaming history.

The game was so successful that a second part followed in 2004 – "The Sith Lords", developed by Obsidian Entertainment. Studio Aspyr is also currently working on a remake of "KOTOR", although this has been postponed several times and is currently in uncertain development.

Battlefront: Experience Star Wars up close and personal

No other "Star Wars" game has captured the feeling of gigantic battles as impressively as the "Battlefront" series. The original from 2004 and its successor "Battlefront 2" (2005) offered large-scale battles between rebels and imperials, playable from a first or third-person perspective. The multiplayer mode was particularly popular, allowing players to compete against each other on iconic planets such as Hoth, Endor or Tatooine.

In 2015, Electronic Arts brought the series back with a lavishly produced reboot. "Star Wars Battlefront" impressed with breathtaking graphics and sound, but was criticized for its limited scope. The successor "Battlefront 2" (2017) offered its own campaign and more content, but was heavily criticized for controversial microtransactions. After several updates, however, the game developed into one of the most popular multiplayer experiences in the "Star Wars" universe.

Jedi: Fallen Order and Survivor: Return of the Force

After years without a story-based single-player adventure, developer Respawn Entertainment landed a surprise hit in 2019 with "Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order". Players took on the role of Cal Kestis, a young Jedi who lives in hiding after Order 66 and must rediscover his connection to the Force.

The game impressed with a successful mix of lightsaber battles, exploration and puzzles – inspired by classics such as "Dark Souls" and "Uncharted". The story fit seamlessly into the official "Star Wars" universe and struck a chord with fans. The sequel "Star Wars Jedi: Survivor" followed in 2023, refining the gameplay and continuing the emotional story. Today, both titles are considered prime examples of modern "Star Wars" storytelling. "Star Wars: Outlaws" also won over fans.

LEGO Star Wars: humor meets nostalgia

A completely different, but no less popular chapter in "Star Wars" gaming history is the "LEGO Star Wars" series. The block adventures from Traveller's Tales have been delighting fans of all ages since 2005. With humorous cutscenes, catchy puzzles and lovingly recreated movie scenes, the games managed to retell the epic in a charming and comical way.

In particular, "LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga", released in 2022, brought together all nine films in a single game – with over 300 playable characters and an open galaxy to explore. For many, it is the perfect family game in the "Star Wars" cosmos.

Whether simulation, role-playing game, shooter or family adventure: hardly any other franchise offers so many different experiences under one starry sky.
