Split Fiction: Popular Video Game to Be Adapted into a Movie
A bidding war is expected to take place among the major Hollywood studios
The trend of video game film adaptations shows no sign of abating: Hollywood has been increasingly turning its attention to adaptations of popular games for some time now and there seems to be no end in sight. As the industry magazine Variety reports, the next project is already waiting. An adaptation of the current hit "Split Fiction" is currently in development.
What is "Split Fiction" about?
It happened pretty quickly: the action-adventure game was only released on March 6, 2025. "Split Fiction" is a co-op game: the players do not compete against each other, but pursue a common goal. The game is about two writers, Zoe and Mio, who are trapped in their own stories. In order to escape, the two have to work together and face different challenges.
"Split Fiction" is currently a huge success, both with fans and critics. So it's no wonder that, according to Variety, the media company Story Kitchen is devoting itself to an adaptation of the Hazelight Studios game. They are currently looking for a director, screenwriter and cast for the project. Variety also reports that there is a bidding war among Hollywood studios. According to the report, there are several interested parties vying for the film rights to the game.
As the game is still in the early stages of development, it is difficult to predict when we can expect the "Split Fiction" film. However, there will be no shortage of game adaptations in the near future: In our big preview of upcoming film adaptations, you'll get a comprehensive overview of what's coming to cinemas and streaming in the next few years!

Film adaptations of video games in recent years
In recent years, the world of video games has increasingly made the leap onto the big screen and into the streaming sector. For a long time, game adaptations had to contend with a rather mediocre reputation, but in recent years there have been a number of successful adaptations. Here we take another look at some of the biggest productions of recent years.
Sonic the Hedgehog
The adaptation of the iconic character Sonic the Hedgehog was a huge success, not only at the box office but also in the hearts of fans. Initial criticism of Sonic's design led to an extensive reworking of the character, which turned out to be a wise decision in the end. "Sonic the Hedgehog" was a hit, which opened the door for further sequels. So far there are two more "Sonic" films, but it won't stop there. Preparations for part 4 have begun and "Sonic 4" is due to be released in cinemas on March 19, 2027.
The Last of Us
Launched in 2023, the HBO series "The Last of Us", based on the game of the same name by Naughty Dog, was celebrated by critics and viewers alike. The series follows the characters Joel and Ellie as they struggle to survive in a post-apocalyptic world. The series stays true to the emotionally gripping narrative of the game while offering new insights and expansions to the story. The acting performances of Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as Joel and Ellie were particularly praised. The second season of the popular series is just around the corner! The time has finally come on April 13.

Uncharted
The film adaptation of the popular action adventure "Uncharted" by Naughty Dog was released in cinemas in 2022 and quickly established itself as a commercial success. Tom Holland, known from the "Spider-Man" films, plays the young Nathan Drake, while Mark Wahlberg fights alongside him as Sully. However, the reviews were rather mixed and not everyone was happy with the film adaptation of the game.

Mortal Kombat
The 2021 remake of "Mortal Kombat" was eagerly awaited by many fans of the famous series. Although the reviews were mixed, "Mortal Kombat" was able to appeal to a considerable fan base with its focus on action and bloody fight scenes. Fans can also look forward to a sequel to "Mortal Kombat": "Mortal Kombat 2" awaits us in cinemas on October 24, 2025. You can find the first images from the sequel here.
