James Cameron's "Avatar 3: Fire and Ash" is set to be a real cinematic event this December. Reason enough for the first official trailer, which will be released in the coming weeks. According to ScreenRant magazine, it should be ready for the cinema release of "The Fantastic Four: First Steps".

A number of images of the third part of the science fiction series have already been published in recent months, for example of the so-called Ash People. They are led by a character called Varang. Cameron describes the character as someone who would do anything for his people because of a lot of suffering - even things that are considered evil. According to the director, one aim of the film is to avoid a clear black-and-white portrayal like that of the humans and the Na'vi.

The production

When "Avatar: The Way of Water" was released in cinemas at the end of 2022, filming for the third part was already 95% complete. Even the first act of "Avatar 4" had already been shot. But as we all know, filming is only a fraction of the work – the elaborate post-production with countless animated details is the real mammoth project. This is why the theatrical release of "Avatar 3" has been postponed from December 2024 to December 19, 2025. Of course, this is nothing compared to the 13 years between parts one and two.

The question of the running time has now been resolved. All moviegoers need to bring a strong bladder: The first movie already lasted 2 hours and 42 minutes and the second then took it to a whopping 3 hours and 10 minutes. The third movie tops that once again and is now supposed to be 2 minutes longer. But hey: that's still significantly shorter than the rough version of the story that was shot: it's supposed to be an impressive 9 hours long. Of course, it won't be released in this form in cinemas. But as "Avatar" is a project close to Cameron's heart, he is shooting all the scenes he wants – even if he has to cut a lot of them later.

In the meantime, there have been rumors that a complete version could be released in the form of an "Avatar" series on Disney+ after the premiere of the film. Cameron has denied this in an interview, but it would still be fascinating to see which ideas didn't make it into the movie version.

What is "Avatar 3" about?

The focus is of course once again on the Sully family, but Spider in particular is likely to take on a bigger role after the events of "The Way of Water". Oona Chaplin ( "Game of Thrones" ) takes on an important antagonist role as Varang. She is the leader of the Ash People – a warlike Na'vi clan that is closely linked to the element of fire. According to Cameron, she and her clan, which also includes Peylak (played by David Thewlis), embody a new moral gray area: not all humans are evil, and not all Na'vi are good.

Other characters from the previous films also return: General Ardmore (Edie Falco), whale hunter Mick Scoresby, RDA boss Parker Selfridge, Dr. Ian Garvin and Corporal Lyle Wainfleet, whose survival has now been confirmed. Of course, "Alien" legend Sigourney Weaver is also back on board. For all further information, take a look at our film preview for "Avatar: Fire and Ash".

The cast

We will be able to see all of this on the big screen at the end of the year. Then we can finally immerse ourselves in the breathtaking world of Pandora again. Alongside Zoe Saldaña, Sam Worthington will of course be back as Jake. Also returning are "Alien" star Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Cliff Curtis, Jack Champion, Britain Dalton as Lo'ak, Jemain Clement, Giovanni Ribsi and Kate Winslet. The theatrical release of "Avatar 3: Fire and Ash" is scheduled for December 19, 2025.
