Supergirl: The first trailer will be released tomorrow!
James Gunn promises a dark reinterpretation
The time has finally come: the first official trailer for the DCU blockbuster "Supergirl" with Milly Alcock! To be precise, it will be released on December 11 at 18:00. A short teaser was released a few days ago, giving us a little taste of Supergirl's new adventures.
There was a lot of confusion about the date of the new teaser trailer: it was actually supposed to be released a few days earlier. Then Warner set a countdown for December 10 at 6 p.m. in Times Square in New York. That would have been fitting, after all, according to insider rumors, "Avengers: Doomsday" will also be released one day later. "Supergirl" distributor Warner Bros. certainly wants to avoid this direct duel. Then came the surprise: after the countdown ended, another short teaser was released, hinting at tomorrow's release.

All this suggests, that Warner already knows that the "Doomsday" trailer will be released later – on December 19 at the latest to coincide with the theatrical release of "Avatar: Fire & Ash".
The upcoming "Supergirl" film is directly based on the comic series "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow" by Tom King, which was published in 2021 and 2022 and is celebrated by critics as one of the best Supergirl stories ever.
It centers on Kara Zor-El, who is hiding out in a remote bar far from Earth. The downfall of Krypton and the feeling that she has become superfluous in the shadow of her cousin Superman have affected her deeply. Her retreat ends, however, when young Ruthye appears: she seeks retribution for the murder of her father and forces Kara to face up to her responsibilities once again. Together they embark on a journey through a dangerous galaxy, face moral trials and wrestle with the question of what makes a true heroine. James Gunn describes his version of Supergirl as much darker, more emotional and multi-layered.
Why "Woman of Tomorrow" is the perfect new beginning
In the past, Supergirl has often found it difficult to break free from the shadow of her famous cousin. With "Woman of Tomorrow", Kara finally gets the narrative she deserves. The story is ideal for convincing old procrastinators and winning over new fans. It offers newcomers a clear narrative structure, focuses on a few but strong characters and dispenses with complicated multiverse elements or cross-references. At the same time, it provides die-hard fans with a profound and respectful reinterpretation of the character.
Particularly exciting: the story plays with classic Western motifs. The search for revenge, the mismatched duo, the journey through a hostile country - all of this is strongly reminiscent of works such as "True Grit" or "Logan". Tom King originally even intended to integrate Lobo into the story as a cynical bounty hunter alongside the desperate Kara. Although this idea didn't make it into the comic, it became relevant again for the movie – more on that in a moment.
Behind the scenes
James Gunn's focus on quality in front of and behind the camera for his new DCU line is also evident in the team behind "Supergirl". The director is Craig Gillespie, who has made a name for himself with films such as "I, Tonya" and "Cruella". Gillespie is known for his ability to create complex female characters with rough edges. A perfect choice for a project like this.
The screenplay was written by Ana Nogueira, who is also to be responsible for the planned "Teen Titans" film. Nogueira has a background in both theater and film and brings a keen sense of dialogue and character development. She also emphasized in interviews how important it was to her to write Kara as a multi-dimensional character who doesn't have to hide her emotions.
In addition to Milly Alcock, we can look forward to other well-known actors on screen. Belgian Matthias Schoenaerts will appear as Krem of the Yellow Hills – a merciless antagonist who also plays a central role in the comic book. Krem killed Ruthye's father and never misses an opportunity to provoke and torment Supergirl. Schoenaerts brings the necessary intensity to give this role the right amount of menace.
The casting of Jason Momoa as the intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo is a particular surprise. The actor known from "Aquaman" had already emphasized in interviews in 2023 that he thought the role of the anarchic anti-hero was perfect. The fact that he is now actually becoming the DCU's Lobo is likely to be a highlight for many fans. Whether and how Lobo will be integrated into the plot has not yet been officially confirmed. The cast is completed by David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham as Supergirl's parents and the young Eve Ridley as Ruthye.
A look into the future
With "Supergirl", the new DCU is getting a character who wants to be much more multi-layered than before. Milly Alcock theoretically has everything this new Kara needs: a mixture of vulnerability, defiance and quiet anger. In these times of generic superhero fare, we are therefore hoping for a breath of fresh air – without any CGI thunderstorms or multiverse overkill. And if the DCU wants to be successful, this movie has to deliver: According to Gunn, Superman, Supergirl, Batman and Wonder Woman are to become the cornerstones of the entire franchise. Cinema release is June 26, 2026.
