Legendary moment in trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day – here's the story behind it
The scene evokes the origin of Spider-Man
The wait will soon be over! The "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" trailer has been announced for tomorrow, Wednesday, March 18. As many can hardly wait, there is now a first taste. Scenes from the new "Spider-Man" film can be seen in several video snippets. One of the snippets, which is only a few seconds long, is particularly interesting, especially for fans of the comics.
The brief moment shows Spider-Man swinging through New York with a person under his arm - evoking the origin of Spider-Man. The scene is based on the legendary cover of "Amazing Fantasy" no. 15. The comic in which Peter Parker alias Spider-Man made his very first appearance in August 1962.
The origin story of Spider-Man
The budding Marvel superhero Peter Parker is introduced in "Amazing Fantasy" No. 15. The Origin Story, which should not only be familiar to comic fans, has its origins here. The clever, shy teenager is bitten by a radioactive spider and from then on has superhuman powers. But before he decides to become a superhero and do good as Spider-Man, he first has to learn a painful lesson: "With great power there must also come — great responsibility!"
The 15th issue of "Amazing Fantasy" was the last in the anthology comic series. For Spider-Man creator Stan Lee, it was the perfect opportunity to establish Peter Parker, an insecure teenager with everyday problems and money worries, as a superhero - something that had never been seen before at the time and was therefore a risk. Nobody knew how it would go down with readers, but as "Amazing Fantasy" was about to be discontinued anyway, the publishers had nothing to lose. Their courage paid off: "Amazing Fantasy" No. 15 was a complete success and led to the launch of "The Amazing Spider-Man" seven months later. From then on, Peter Parker was the hero of his own comic series. The rest is history. Spider-Man became a figurehead for Marvel and is still one of the best-known and most popular superheroes ever.
Anyone who owns an original edition of "Amazing Fantasy" No. 15 today can consider themselves lucky. The comic is a coveted collector's item due to its place in Spider-Man history. In well-preserved condition, it is worth a fortune. In 2021, a copy of the comic fetched 3.6 million US dollars - making it the most expensive comic at that time. A remarkable record. Even if another superhero is now in the lead: Last year, a copy of the "Superman" first edition from 1939 was sold for the proud sum of 9.12 million.
From comics to the big screen
Decades after his first appearance in "Amazing Fantasy", Spider-Man continued his triumphal march from the comics to the movies. Since Sam Raimi's 'Spider-Man' trilogy from the 2000s, it has been impossible to imagine the big screen without the superhero. In Raimi's films, Tobey Maguire initially slipped into the role of Peter Parker alias Spider-Man. However, Maguire was not to be the last actor to be given this honor. Similar to James Bond, there are always new reincarnations of the screen hero.
There was a complete reboot back in the 2010s. Director Marc Webb took the helm and turned Andrew Garfield into the famous superhero in two 'Amazing Spider-Man' films. A new era then began again in 2019. From then on, Spider-Man was embodied by Tom Holland - and not just in his own film series. The character was also integrated into the existing Marvel Cinematic Universe to become part of the Avengers alongside other superheroes such as Iron Man and Captain America. After "Spider-Man: Homecoming" , "Spider-Man: Far From Home" and "Spider-Man: No Way Home" , his fourth solo adventure will soon follow: "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" opens in cinemas on July 31, 2026.
