Two of the most famous Batman villains of all time are set to face off in a major crossover! As reported by the industry magazine Deadline, a film featuring Bane and Deathstroke is in the works – and there are even two potential candidates for the director's chair!

Greg Mottola is currently considered a promising candidate. Although he has mainly made a name for himself with comedies like "Superbad", he is now also active in the new DC Universe. He directed two episodes of the second season of "Peacemaker" and worked closely with DC head James Gunn on the project. Additionally, according to Jeff Sneider, Russian filmmaker Ilya Viktorovich Naischuller is also being considered as a potential director. He has primarily made a name for himself with action films like "Nobody" and "Hardcore Henry".

The character Bane has been one of Batman's most famous villains for years and has already appeared in films like "Batman & Robin" and "The Dark Knight Rises". Tom Hardy's portrayal of the masked villain, in particular, has remained in the memories of many fans. In the comics, Bane is considered not only extremely strong but also highly intelligent. His most famous story is likely the "Knightfall" comic series, in which he first psychologically breaks Batman down and eventually even breaks his spine.

Deathstroke, on the other hand, has had fewer major film appearances so far, but is also one of the most popular DC villains among comic book fans. In the earlier DCEU, the character was originally supposed to be played by Joe Manganiello and face off against Ben Affleck's Batman. Brief scenes featuring Deathstroke were already seen in "Justice League" as well as in "Zack Snyder's Justice League". However, the deadly mercenary had more substantial appearances in the DC series "Arrow" and "Titans".

It is currently unclear when "Bane & Deathstroke" will actually hit theaters. First, a film about the Batman villain "Clayface" is set to be released on October 23, 2026.

The Most Popular Batman Villains of All Time

For decades, Batman has captivated audiences not only with his dark atmosphere and thrilling stories, but above all with his legendary adversaries. Hardly any other superhero boasts such an iconic rogues' gallery as the Dark Knight of Gotham City. Many of his enemies have long since become pop culture legends in their own right and regularly appear in comics, movies, TV series, and video games. They range from deranged psychopaths to brilliant strategists or tragic figures with moving backstories.

The Joker: Batman's Most Dangerous Enemy

The most famous Batman villain is undoubtedly the Joker. The clown-like criminal is considered the complete opposite of Batman. While Bruce Wayne embodies order and control, the Joker stands for chaos and madness. It is precisely these contrasts that make the relationship between the two characters so fascinating.

The Joker has no superpowers, but he is extremely intelligent and completely unpredictable. His brutal crimes repeatedly strike fear into Gotham City. The character became particularly popular through numerous film appearances. Above all, Heath Ledger's portrayal in "The Dark Knight" is still considered legendary today. Joaquin Phoenix also sparked worldwide enthusiasm with his performance in "Joker".

Bane: The Greatest Physical Threat

Bane is one of Batman's strongest adversaries. The masked villain combines immense physical strength with high intelligence and strategic thinking. Unlike many other enemies, Bane does not rely solely on violence but often plans his attacks well in advance.

The character became particularly well-known through the comic book story "Knightfall". There, Bane succeeds in pushing Batman to his mental and physical limits. Ultimately, he even breaks the Dark Knight's spine – a moment that ranks among the most famous scenes in Batman history. Bane also made an impression on the big screen. In "The Dark Knight Rises", he was played by Tom Hardy and quickly became a fan favorite.

Harley Quinn: From Sidekick to Icon

Originally, Harley Quinn was intended merely as the Joker's sidekick. But shortly after her first appearance, the character evolved into one of the most popular DC characters of all time. The former psychiatrist falls in love with the Joker and eventually becomes a dangerous criminal herself. Harley Quinn captivates many fans with her crazy humor, chaotic personality, and unique style. At the same time, the character also has tragic aspects, as her relationship with the Joker is often marked by manipulation. Harley Quinn gained widespread fame primarily through Margot Robbie's portrayal in "Suicide Squad" and "Birds of Prey".

The Penguin: Gotham's Gangster Boss

The Penguin is one of the oldest Batman villains of all time. Behind his harmless-sounding nickname lies the ruthless gangster boss Oswald Cobblepot. With his elegant demeanor, umbrellas as weapons, and criminal enterprises, the Penguin quickly became a cult figure.

Unlike many other Batman adversaries, the Penguin is not a raving madman, but rather a classic mafia boss. That is precisely what makes him so interesting. He controls large parts of Gotham's underworld and uses his influence to expand his power. The character became particularly popular thanks to Danny DeVito in "Batman Returns" as well as Colin Farrell in "The Batman" and "The Penguin".

The Riddler: The Genius of Riddles

The Riddler is one of Batman's most intelligent adversaries. His trademark is the use of complicated riddles and games to challenge the police and Batman. Edward Nygma, the Riddler's real name, wants to prove one thing above all else: that he is smarter than everyone else.

The character captivates many fans because he challenges Batman not only physically but, above all, mentally. Often, the Dark Knight must decipher complicated clues to prevent crimes in time. In "The Batman", the Riddler was portrayed in a particularly dark light by Paul Dano. This modern version reminded many viewers of real-life serial killers and made the character even more menacing.

Two-Face: The Tragic Foe

Harvey Dent was once one of Batman's most important allies and was regarded as Gotham City's honest district attorney. However, after a serious accident, half of his face is disfigured, causing Dent to lose his mind and become Two-Face. More than almost any other Batman villain, this character embodies the conflict between good and evil. Two-Face decides many of his actions by flipping a coin, revealing his split personality. It is his tragic backstory in particular that makes the character so popular with fans. In "The Dark Knight", Two-Face was impressively portrayed by Aaron Eckhart.

Why Batman's Villains Are So Popular

Batman's adversaries have fascinated fans for decades because they are far more than mere villains. Many of them possess complex personalities, tragic backstories, or unique ideologies. Often, they even mirror certain traits of Batman, testing him not only physically but also morally. This is precisely why Batman's rogues gallery remains one of the strongest and most beloved in the entire superhero genre to this day.
