James Gunn Confirms New Wonder Woman Film for the DCU
A new Batman project is likewise in the pipeline
Exciting news for all DC fans: Wonder Woman's future on the big screen had long been uncertain – until now! In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly, James Gunn officially confirmed that a new "Wonder Woman" film is actively in development.
However, Gunn did not reveal who is writing and directing the script. The casting of the Amazon is also still open. But one thing is certain: Gal Gadot, who made Wonder Woman an audience favorite in the Zack Snyder era, will not be returning. Her planned third solo appearance was canceled when Gunn and Safran took over creative control. Although Gadot had repeatedly expressed hope for a return in the past, "Wonder Woman 3" was ultimately canceled in 2023.
In May 2025, David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, set the course for the future of the DC universe in a conference call with investors. He named four key characters: Superman, Batman, Supergirl and Wonder Woman. It can therefore be assumed that Wonder Woman will play a significant role in the DCU. Alongside a planned movie, the HBO series "Paradise Lost" is also still in development. The series revolves around political intrigue on the Island of the Amazons – long before Diana Prince was even born. Gunn himself describes the project as a kind of "Game of Thrones" set on Paradise Island. The series is to be developed separately from the feature film.
The new DCU will kick off with "Superman" starring David Corenswet. The movie will be released in cinemas on July 11, 2025. This will be followed in June 2026 by "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow", in which Milly Alcock will be seen as Kara Zor-El. At the same time, a new Batman film inspired by Grant Morrison's "Batman and Son" has been announced. This could introduce an exciting twist to the Myth of the Dark Knight with the introduction of Damian Wayne. It is not known whether the project will replace the previously planned Batman movie "The Brave and the Bold".
Wonder Woman on the Big Screen: All Film Appearances of the Iconic Amazon
The character of Wonder Woman – aka Diana Prince – is one of the most important superheroes in pop culture. She has shaped comics, series and animated formats for decades. In recent years, however, she has also conquered the big screen and streaming platforms. From her first live-action film appearance to animated adventures such as "Wonder Woman: Bloodlines" – we take a look back at all the Amazon princess's major film appearances.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice: Her First Major Live-Action Appearance
Gal Gadot made her debut as Wonder Woman in Zack Snyder's "Batman v Superman". As Diana Prince, she acts mysteriously in the background before appearing in full armor for the first time in the final battle against Doomsday. Her heroic entrance was rewarded with enthusiastic reactions – Gadot's presence, paired with Hans Zimmer's impressive musical guiding theme, made her the scene-stealer of an otherwise controversial movie.

Wonder Woman: The Breakthrough
Director Patty Jenkins created one of the most successful DC films of recent years with "Wonder Woman". The plot takes Diana from her home in Themyscira to the First World War, where she is convinced that she must fight Ares, the God of War. In addition to its emotional depth, the movie also impressed with its clear message, visual elegance and a strong main character. Particularly iconic: Diana's rise from the trenches in No Man's Land.
Justice League: Two Films, Two Impressions
In the movie version of "Justice League" (2017), Wonder Woman's character took a bit of a backseat, but was developed much better in the four-hour Zack Snyder's "Justice League" (2021). In this version, she takes a central role in the team, reveals more about her origins and has some standout action scenes – including a bloody opening scene in a museum.

Wonder Woman: Bloodlines: The Animated Origin Story
With "Wonder Woman: Bloodlines", DC Animation released a stand-alone animated film that reinterprets Diana's backstory. The movie shows how she leaves Themyscira for the first time to confront the war in the human world, and later encounters a threat from the villain Doctor Cyber. With strong visuals, action and a respectful treatment of the myth, "Bloodlines" is an important contribution to the cinematic representation of Wonder Woman – especially in the animated DC universe. Although not in the same canon as the live-action films, "Bloodlines" is considered one of the best cinematic adaptations of Diana's story.

Wonder Woman 1984: A Step Back?
In the colorful "WW84", we see Diana in the 1980s – more isolated, more reflective, and still mourning the loss of Steve Trevor. Through a mysterious wishing stone, Trevor magically returns, while Diana must deal with the new threats Maxwell Lord and Cheetah. The movie was stylistically bold, but received a mixed reception. While some fans appreciated the optimistic tone, others criticized the weak story and gaps in logic.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods: Small Appearance, Big Impact
In one of the final scenes of "Shazam! Fury of the Gods", Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot again) appears as a deus ex machina to revive Billy Batson. Her appearance was surprising but welcome – and once again symbolized her importance to the old DCEU. Despite its brevity, it brought a certain grandeur and seriousness to the otherwise rather humorous movie.

The Flash: Farewell in the Multiverse
Wonder Woman also made a brief but effective cameo appearance in "The Flash". In one scene, she helps Batman and Flash on a rescue mission. This was Gadot's last known appearance as Diana – a quiet but symbolic end to her journey in the DCEU, as Warner Bros. announced the reboot of the DC universe under James Gunn and Peter Safran shortly afterwards.
Conclusion: A Heroine for Generations
From animated films to blockbusters, from No Man's Land to the multiverse: Wonder Woman has established herself in numerous movies as a multi-layered heroine with compassion, strength and principles. Whether as Gal Gadot in the DCEU or as an animated warrior in "Bloodlines", Diana Prince remains one of the most influential superheroes in film history. The upcoming reboot will open a new chapter, but the mark she has left so far will remain.
