Described as involving global warming, time travel, and a possible superhero angle within two timelines — one set in the 1980s and one set in present day. The main characters in the 80s time period are said to be teenagers. Hollywood star Matt Damon is set to play the leading role.

"The Hunt for Gollum" will take place at the same time as "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring", more specifically after Bilbo's birthday party and before the Mines of Moria. At the center is Gollum, once again played by Andy Serkis, who will also direct the film.
