Dr. Ephraim Goodweather is the head of the "Canary Team" at the Centers for Disease Control in New York City. He and his team are tasked with investigating a mysterious viral outbreak that exhibits the characteristics of an ancient and malevolent strain of vampirism. As the vampirism spreads, Eph, his team, and a group of ordinary New Yorkers wage a battle for the very fate of humanity.
