Finally, the "Call of Duty" movie has a release date! Like many other films, the adaptation was unveiled at CinemaCon 2026. During the Paramount panel, director Peter Berg also spoke about the approach he is taking.

He emphasized that both he and screenwriter Taylor Sheridan place great importance on authenticity in their storytelling. In particular, they aim for an authentic portrayal of elite soldiers "on a human level".

"Taylor and I are both deeply connected to the special ops community."

At the same time, they are also planning a story of "amazing scale". Ultimately, this also fits the source material – after all, "Call of Duty" is one of the biggest and most successful gaming franchises of all time. It has not yet been officially confirmed what story the adaptation will tell. Hollywood insider Daniel Richtman recently reported that a modern setting is planned. So the first signs suggest that the film is set in the present day.

The theatrical release of Call of Duty

Following the film's announcement in late summer 2025, the next major step is the announcement of the release date. However, a little patience is still required: The "Call of Duty" film will hit theaters on June 30, 2028. It remains unclear, which actors will star in the adaptation. We'll keep you updated in any case!

Director Peter Berg

With Peter Berg, the project is being taken on by a director who has already worked extensively in the action and military genres. Among others, "Lone Survivor" falls into this genre, focusing on the mission of a U.S. special forces unit in Afghanistan. His film "Mile 22" revolves around an elite agent. Berg also directed the sci-fi action film "Battleship".

"Deepwater Horizon", a story about the explosion of an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico, and "Patriot's Day", which deals with the attack on the Boston Marathon, demonstrate Berg's interest in real-life events and their cinematic adaptation. Looking at his filmography, it becomes clear which actor the director particularly enjoys working with: Mark Wahlberg. It therefore seems at least possible that Wahlberg will appear in the "Call of Duty" movie.

Screenwriter Taylor Sheridan

Screenwriter Taylor Sheridan has established himself in recent years with several successful productions. He made his breakthrough with "Sicario", which deals with the drug war on the U.S.-Mexico border. The drug thriller was directed by "Dune" director Denis Villeneuve and has a loyal fan base.

This was followed by films such as "Hell or High Water", which received multiple Oscar nominations, and "Wind River", which Sheridan also directed. His work is often characterized by a restrained, grounded storytelling style and morally complex characters.

In recent years, however, Sheridan has primarily focused on television series. With the neo-Western series "Yellowstone", he scored a massive hit that quickly became one of the most popular TV shows of recent years. This spawned several spin-offs, including "1883" and "1923", which further expand the universe. In addition, Sheridan is also responsible for other successful productions, such as "Mayor of Kingstown" and "Special Ops: Lioness". "Lioness", in particular, could be thematically similar to "Call of Duty".

Overall, Sheridan has thus become one of the most influential series creators of our time – particularly in the realm of gritty, realistic content in the genres of action, thriller, and Western. This experience could also benefit the "Call of Duty" adaptation.

Call of Duty: One of the Most Successful Video Game Series

The film adaptation is based on the "Call of Duty" series, which has been one of the video game industry's most commercially successful brands since its first installment in 2003. Originally focused on World War II scenarios, the series later shifted its focus to modern and futuristic conflicts.

A decisive turning point was "Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare", which left a lasting mark on the genre through its cinematic style reminiscent of action movies and a stronger narrative focus. With later titles such as "Call of Duty: Warzone", the concept was expanded to include new game modes.

The series is considered a defining example of the growing convergence of film aesthetics and video games. At the same time, it has built up a large and loyal player base over the years, which contributes significantly to its ongoing success. The most recent release is "Call of Duty: Black Ops 7", and you can watch the trailer for it here.
