Film about OpenAI: Andrew Garfield and director Luca Guadagnino in conversation for "Artificial"
Garfield will probably play OpenAI co-founder and CEO Sam Altman
"Challengers" director Luca Guadagnino may have found a new project: Among others, The Hollywood Reporter has learned that a movie called "Artifical" is in the works at Amazon MGM. It is set to take a look behind the scenes of "Chat GPT" developer OpenAI. Guadagnino is currently in talks to direct the project.
The plot is likely to focus on a specific period in the company's history. A turbulent time in 2023 is to be depicted, when co-founder and CEO Sam Altman was unexpectedly dismissed from his position. However, he was reinstated a few days later.
Andrew Garfield and other actors
The Hollywood Reporter's sources say that Andrew Garfield is likely to take on the role of Altman. Garfield is known as Peter Parker from the "Amazing Spider-Man" films, among others. He was also seen in David Fincher's "The Social Network". "Social Network" also took a look at the turbulence behind the scenes of a major tech company. The film sheds light on the history of Facebook.
Monica Barbaro is in talks for another role. The actress was last seen alongside Timothée Chalamet in "A Complete Unknown". She was also part of the cast of "Top Gun: Maverick". In addition, "Anora" actor Yura Borisov could also play an important character.
Luca Guadagnino
Guadagnino is probably known to many film fans for "Call Me by Your Name". The film provided the breakthrough for today's Hollywood star Timothée Chalamet. The director later also made the film "Bones And All" with Chalamet. In 2024, Guadagnino caused a sensation with the tennis drama "Challengers". Superstar Zendaya took on a leading role in the film.
Shooting of "Artificial" is scheduled to start in California and Italy in the summer of 2025. The project does not yet have a start date.
After the Hunt
Next up for Guadagnino and Amazon MGM is "After the Hunt" in October 2025. The story centers on a college professor who finds herself at a personal and professional crossroads. A student accuses one of her colleagues and a dark secret from her own past threatens to come to light.
The cast boasts a number of prominent actors: the lead role is played by "Pretty Woman" star Julia Roberts. Also taking part are "The Bear" actress Ayo Edebiri, Michael Stuhlbarg and, once again, Andrew Garfield. Guadagnino has already worked with Stuhlbarg in "Call Me by Your Name".

Challengers
"After the Hunt" will be the second collaboration between Guadagnino and Amazon MGM. "Challengers" was released in cinemas in 2024. The film was received overwhelmingly positively and is even one of the best films of the year for some film fans. It centers on the triangle of the characters Tashi, Patrick and Art. Zendaya stars as Tashi Duncan – a former tennis player turned coach. She is joined by Josh O'Connor as Patrick Zweig and Mike Faist as Art Donaldson, her husband and current protégé. The film is not told chronologically, but jumps back and forth between the present and the past.
In this film, Guadagnino combines gripping sporting elements with complex emotional tensions. Themes such as jealousy, ambition and lust are central. "Challengers" impresses with its psychological complexity and the vivid portrayal of the conflicts between the three main characters. The tennis matches are dynamically staged and accompanied by a pulsating electro soundtrack by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. The combination of staging and music gives many scenes a special intensity.
