Rumour: New Jason Bourne film without Matt Damon!
Edward Berger is still in talks to direct
This news is likely to spark debate: In recent years, there has been repeated speculation about a possible continuation of the "Jason Bourne" series, but no concrete progress has been made. Now, however, there are increasing indications that a new film could still be in the works – albeit with a significant change.
As Hollywood insider Jeff Sneider revealed in his podcast The Hot Mic, production is indeed set to go ahead without Matt Damon. At the beginning of 2026, Damon himself was still optimistic but cautious. Although he hoped for a sequel, he emphasized that it would be complicated to make happen. Earlier versions of the script had not convinced him to reprise the role of Jason Bourne.
An attempt had already been made to realign the franchise in 2012, with Jeremy Renner taking over the lead role in "The Bourne Legacy". In 2019, a spin-off series called "Treadstone" was launched, with Jeremy Irvine playing the central character. However, neither project was particularly well received by critics or fans. So it would be a pretty risky undertaking to shoot a new "Jason Bourne" movie without Matt Damon. After all, he is the poster boy for the action series par excellence.
In the meantime, "All Quiet on the Western Front" director Edward Berger has been linked to the project. But nothing much has happened since then. In any case, it will probably be some time before Jason Bourne returns to the big screen.
The Jason Bourne series: A modern milestone in action cinema
Hardly any other action film series has changed the genre as profoundly as the story of Jason Bourne. Since the early 2000s, the character has come to represent a new type of spy film: raw, realistic, politically charged, and emotionally complex. Instead of glamorous gadgets and self-deprecating coolness, the focus here is on a broken protagonist who is searching for one thing above all else – his own identity. A look back shows how influential this series has been for modern cinema.
The beginning: The Bourne Identity (2002)
"The Bourne Identity", released in 2002, marked the beginning of a success story that few could have predicted at the time. Director Doug Liman adapted Robert Ludlum's novel into a suspenseful thriller that stood out from the spy films that had dominated the genre until then.
The film centers on a man with no memory who is rescued from the sea and gradually realizes that he has extraordinary abilities. Matt Damon embodied Jason Bourne with a mixture of physical presence and inner turmoil. Unlike classic screen spies, Bourne was not a confident daredevil, but a driven man suffering from the shadows of his past.
The film impressed with its handmade action, realistic fights, and dense atmosphere. Instead of exaggerated special effects, the filmmakers relied on credible stunts and comprehensible dramaturgy – an approach that was extremely well received by audiences.
The perfection of style: The Bourne Supremacy (2004)
With "The Bourne Supremacy", Paul Greengrass took over as director and from then on shaped the unmistakable style of the series. His dynamic handheld camera, fast cuts, and almost documentary-like look gave the film tremendous intensity. In terms of content, Bourne is once again haunted by his past. The story delves deeper into the themes of guilt and responsibility. While secret services try to cover up their own misdeeds, Bourne fights not only for survival, but also for moral clarity.
The spectacular chase through Moscow in particular is still considered one of the most impressive action sequences of the 2000s. The film proved that intelligent storytelling and uncompromising action do not have to be a contradiction.
The climax: The Bourne Ultimatum (2007)
In 2007, the series reached its preliminary climax with "The Bourne Ultimatum". Paul Greengrass brought the story to a logical conclusion and solved the mystery surrounding the secret Treadstone program. The film combines global locations with nerve-racking action scenes – from London to Madrid to New York. At the same time, the focus always remains on Bourne's inner conflict. His desire for truth and self-determination lends emotional depth to the plot. The Bourne Ultimatum was acclaimed by critics and won several Oscars in technical categories. For many fans, this film is the perfect conclusion to the original trilogy.
The attempt at an extension: The Bourne Legacy (2012)
After the trilogy ended, a reboot without Matt Damon was attempted in 2012. In "The Bourne Legacy", Jeremy Renner took on the lead role as Aaron Cross. The film expanded the universe to include more secret government programs and attempted to introduce new perspectives. Despite solid action and ambitious approaches, however, the response was more subdued. Many viewers missed the emotional connection to the central character Jason Bourne that had made the original films so powerful.
The return of the original: Jason Bourne (2016)
In 2016, Matt Damon returned to the screen in "Jason Bourne" – once again directed by Paul Greengrass. The film tackled current issues such as global surveillance and digital data collection and attempted to transfer the character into a new political reality. Although the film was commercially successful, reviews were mixed. Some praised the uncompromising staging, while others saw a repetition of familiar patterns. Nevertheless, the film showed that the character of Jason Bourne had lost none of his fascination even years after his debut.

The series experiment: Treadstone (2019)
The 2019 series "Treadstone" attempted to further expand the universe. The plot shed light on the origins of the secret agent program and told several parallel stories in different countries and time periods. Despite interesting approaches and international locations, the series was unable to establish itself in the long term and was canceled after one season. However, the experiment showed how great the narrative potential of the material is in principle.
The legacy of the series
Looking back, the "Jason Bourne" series has had a lasting impact on action cinema. It ushered in an era in which realism, political relevance, and psychological depth came to the fore. The raw staging and intense camera work influenced numerous subsequent productions. Above all, however, the series established a new type of hero: not an infallible super agent, but a man fighting against his own system and grappling with the consequences of his past. Jason Bourne thus symbolizes modern action cinema – intense, multi-layered, and always in search of truth.
