This week, we received several new updates about upcoming DC projects. In a major interview with "Rolling Stone" magazine, DC boss James Gunn talked about "The Batman 2", the new "Supergirl" movie, and much more.

The Batman 2

After the success of Matt Reeves' "The Batman", many superhero fans have been wondering: When will the sequel finally arrive? While Gunn couldn't give a definite answer, he did offer some behind-the-scenes insight. One thing he made clear: "The Batman 2" has not been canceled, despite some rumors. Instead, Gunn is asking fans for patience. The reason for the long wait is that there's still no script for the sequel – writer Matt Reeves simply needs more time.

And a strong script is important to Gunn: he also mentioned that one of the previously announced DCU projects has since been canceled – because he wasn't satisfied with the quality of the story. However, it's unclear which project he was referring to. Possible candidates include "Sgt. Rock", "The Authority", or "Swamp Thing".

"The Batman 2" was originally slated for release in October 2025. As of now, it's scheduled to hit theaters on October 1, 2027. Gunn also addressed the question of whether Robert Pattinson's Batman could ever be integrated into the DCU.

"It would be a consideration. We'd have to think about it. [...] But it's not likely."

However, the DC boss did not want to completely rule it out either.

The Brave and the Bold

He also commented on another upcoming "Batman" project. A film titled "The Brave and the Bold" is currently in development with "It" director Andy Muschietti. However, this movie won't focus on Robert Pattinson's Batman from Matt Reeves' 2022 movie. Instead, it will introduce a brand-new "Batman". That said, Gunn remained fairly vague when describing the project.

"I think I have a way in, by the way. I think I really know what it's – I just am dealing with the writer to make sure that we can make it a reality."

Gunn also emphasized once again the importance of the superhero for DC Studios:

"I am working with the writer of Batman and trying to get it right, because he's incredibly important to DC, as is Wonder Woman. So outside of the stuff that I'm doing in the projects that are actively going, our two priorities are finishing our Wonder Woman and our Batman scripts."

Supergirl

Gunn also spoke about the upcoming "Supergirl" film starring "House of the Dragon" star Milly Alcock. He confirmed that the project's title has been changed. Originally, the film was set to be called "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow", but the name has now been shortened – the movie will simply be called "Supergirl".

What Is Already Known About "The Batman 2"?

There are quite a few DC projects to look forward to in the future. However, given the popularity and success of "The Batman", fans are likely most excited about the sequel to Matt Reeves' film. So far, not much is known about the plot of "The Batman 2", but there are already a few details about the cast.

The cast of "The Batman 2" holds few surprises at first glance: Robert Pattinson will once again step into the role of Bruce Wayne. Before the first movie, many fans and critics were skeptical about whether the former "Twilight" star could live up to expectations as a believable Batman. However, his performance did win over most of the doubters. Jeffrey Wright will also return as James Gordon, and Andy Serkis will reprise his role as the loyal butler Alfred Pennyworth.

Also returning is Colin Farrell as the Penguin – a role that has since earned him his own spin-off series, "The Penguin", on the prestigious HBO network. The show has proven popular with superhero fans around the world. Whether Zoë Kravitz will return as Catwoman remains unclear for now. First up in the DC Universe, however, is the new "Superman" movie, which is set to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
