The Best Horror Series Available for Streaming
Don't miss these highlights!
Horror is everywhere, but good entertainment is far too rare! Unfortunately, the genre is full of cheaply produced, mass-market fare. And the worst part is: even when you finally find a good movie, after two hours the search starts all over again. It's a different story with TV shows. But here, more than anywhere else, nobody wants to waste their time on mediocrity!
But no problem – we're here for you! In this video, we'll give you a quick rundown of our personal horror recommendations: the best scary series on Netflix, Prime Video, and Hulu!
Netflix: Of Dying Families, Witches, and Zombies
Let's start with Netflix. When it comes to horror series, the streaming giant has a few absolute heavyweights in its lineup that have set the bar. An absolute must-watch is "The Fall of the House of Usher". Series creator Mike Flanagan takes Edgar Allan Poe's dark writings and weaves them into a modern, pitch-black satire. It tells the story of the bloody downfall of a ruthless pharmaceutical dynasty, whose family members are gradually and gruesomely killed off by a mysterious woman. Visually brilliant and macabre right up to the very last minute!
A real hidden gem for anyone who wants to be truly scared again is the French series "Marianne". A successful horror author discovers that the demonic witch from her novels has come to life in the real world and is haunting her hometown. The series relies on a disturbing, eerie atmosphere and shocking moments that are guaranteed to keep you up at night!
For those who prefer a faster-paced and bloodier experience, "All of Us Are Dead" is the perfect choice. A mutated zombie virus breaks out at a South Korean high school. What follows is an uncompromising, extremely dynamic struggle for survival spanning multiple episodes, where you can't be sure any character will make it through.
Amazon Prime Video: Sleepless Nights, Raw Hatred, and Fanatical Love
Next up is Amazon Prime Video. If you browse the standard subscription here, you'll find surprisingly sophisticated and dark shows. A real gem for fans of clever psychological thrillers is "The Devil's Hour", starring "Doctor Who" actor Peter Capaldi. The series centers on a woman who wakes up every night at exactly 3:33 a.m. from nightmarish visions and is drawn deep into a sinister series of murders. An extremely cleverly crafted, dark mystery that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last second!
If you like things that are psychologically extremely unsettling, check out the anthology series "Them". In Season 1, a Black family moves into an all-white neighborhood in Los Angeles in the 1950s. The racist terror from their neighbors gradually intertwines with malevolent, supernatural phenomena in their own home – a visually stylish but extremely intense experience.
And for anyone looking for modern psychological horror: "Swarm" gets right under your skin. The series tells the story of a young woman whose fanatical love for a pop star completely spirals out of control and ends in a bloody trail of violence. A disturbing look at toxic fan culture!
Hulu: Horror for Every Taste
Hulu's streaming service has long offered more than just family entertainment; it also delivers a truly intense selection of horror. "The Strain", for example, from Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro, is extremely dark and wonderfully uncompromising. After a mysterious plane lands, a global epidemic breaks out – but instead of coughs and hoarseness, we're in for some bona fide vampires! The creatures are disfigured, disgusting, and absolutely deadly. Perfect, artisanal body horror with an apocalyptic atmosphere!
No less legendary is "American Horror Story". Since each season tells a completely new story, it's perfect for jumping in at any point. Whether it's a creepy asylum, a gruesome witch cult, or a crazy circus – the series is an absolute smorgasbord for every horror fan. There are currently 13 seasons – so plenty of spine-chilling viewing material to stock up on. You can also watch the series on Prime Video.
For anyone looking for a true, international hidden gem, "Gannibal" is an absolute must-watch. The Japanese series sends a police officer and his family to a remote mountain village. But behind the idyllic facade, he quickly uncovers a disturbing truth about the villagers. An extremely unsettling, powerfully acted folk horror trip with a magnificent atmosphere!
