A new live-action "Ghostbusters" movie is apparently in development at Sony Pictures! According to a report by Hollywood insider Daniel Richtman, the studio is working on a spin-off of the popular franchise titled "Ghostbusters: Nightmare on 34th Street". However, the film has not yet been officially confirmed.

According to the report, Josh Miller is set to write the screenplay for the new "Ghostbusters" adventure. The writer has previously worked on "Sonic the Hedgehog" and the Christmas action-comedy "Violent Night", among other projects. The rumored title "Nightmare on 34th Street" is particularly interesting. It appears to allude to two well-known films: the Christmas classic "Miracle on 34th Street" and the horror series "A Nightmare on Elm Street". This combination could suggest that the Ghostbusters will be active in New York during the Christmas season this time around.

The last live-action film in the series was "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire", which hit theaters in March 2024. However, the sequel failed to match the success of its predecessors. With a budget of $100 million, the film grossed just over $200 million. Since then, things have been pretty quiet around the franchise. It is not known whether the new film is intended as a direct sequel to "Frozen Empire" or will focus on a new cast of characters. It's important to note, however, that the information available so far consists of rumors. Sony has not yet commented.

Several New Ghostbusters Projects in Development

If the rumors turn out to be true, "Nightmare on 34th Street" wouldn't be the only new "Ghostbusters" project Sony is currently working on. For example, the animated series "Ghostbusters: Night Shift" is scheduled to premiere on Netflix in 2027. The story is set in 1994, five years after the events of "Ghostbusters 2". The story centers on a group of young New Yorkers who actually have no experience with ghosts whatsoever. However, when a new supernatural threat descends upon the city, they must step up and become ghostbusters themselves. Executive producers include Jason Reitman, Gil Kenan, and Dan Aykroyd, among others.

Additionally, Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation are developing another animated "Ghostbusters" feature film. Kris Pearn, who directed "Arthur Christmas", among other films, is set to direct. No information is available yet regarding the plot or a release date.

The Ghostbusters Series: From Ghostbusters to a Cult Franchise

Hardly any other film series has combined ghosts, comedy, and science fiction as successfully as "Ghostbusters". Since the first movie in 1984, the Ghostbusters – with their proton packs, slime, and the Ecto-1 – have been part of pop culture. Over the decades, the franchise has been expanded and reimagined multiple times without losing sight of its core elements.

The 1984 Cult Classic

"Ghostbusters" laid the foundation in 1984. The story centers on scientists Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, and Egon Spengler, who, after being fired from the university, decide to start their own company to combat supernatural phenomena. Shortly thereafter, Winston Zeddemore joins the team.

What initially looks like an unusual business idea quickly turns into a dangerous adventure. Paranormal events are on the rise in New York, which ultimately turn out to be connected to the ancient god Gozer and an impending apocalypse. Director Ivan Reitman combined spectacular special effects with the deadpan humor of Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson. The film became a huge success and made the Ghostbusters an integral part of pop culture.

Ghostbusters 2

Five years later, "Ghostbusters 2" followed. The original team returned, but the ghostbusters had largely gone out of business in the meantime. It wasn't until a mysterious slime-like substance was discovered beneath New York and paranormal events began occurring again that Peter, Ray, Egon, and Winston had to spring into action once more. The sequel also relied on a mix of humor and supernatural adventure. Although "Ghostbusters 2" didn't quite match the success of its predecessor, the series remained popular with audiences. A particularly memorable moment is the finale, in which the Statue of Liberty marches through New York.

The 2016 Reboot

After a long hiatus, "Ghostbusters" was rebooted in 2016. Director Paul Feig assembled an entirely new team of female ghostbusters. Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones took on the lead roles. The film told a standalone story and leaned more heavily on modern comedy. Although the reboot was met with mixed reviews from critics, it failed to achieve the desired success at the box office. As a result, a direct sequel never materialized.

The Return of the Original Cast

With "Ghostbusters: Afterlife", the franchise finally took a new direction in 2021. Director Jason Reitman, the son of the original director Ivan Reitman, continued the story from the first two films. This time, the focus was on young characters who establish a connection to the original Ghostbusters. Alongside the new generation, several familiar actors also returned. As a result, the film successfully combined nostalgia with a new story. The next sequel, "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire", followed in 2024. The plot shifted back more heavily to New York, as old and new ghostbusters had to team up to face a supernatural threat.
