Filming is still scheduled to begin in October

A setback for the "God of War" series! According to several U.S. media outlets, lead actor Ryan Hurst, who was set to play the role of Kratos, was seriously injured during filming. To avoid major delays, Amazon is now starting over with a different actor.

Hurst suffered a torn bicep during a stunt sequence on set in Vancouver. The injury is reportedly so severe that surgery was necessary. Production has been put on hold for the time being following the accident. Although the actor's full recovery is, of course, the top priority, his absence apparently could not be reconciled with the series' tight schedule. Initially, there were fears that, in the worst-case scenario, filming could be postponed until 2027.

As things stand, production is set to resume in August. The actual start of filming is still scheduled for mid-October – but with a new actor in the lead role. It is not yet known who will portray the legendary Kratos in the future.

Here's what we know about the series adaptation

In terms of plot, the focus is, of course, on Kratos and Atreus. Together, the two embark on a journey to scatter the ashes of their late wife and mother, Faye. The first season is set to consist of a total of ten episodes, while a second season has already been confirmed. An official premiere date for the first season has not yet been announced. However, based on current information, a 2027 release seems at least realistic.

Cast and Crew

The cast of the series adaptation already has a lot to offer. "Lost" star Sonya Walger was recently cast in the role of the goddess Freya. The actress is likely already familiar to many series fans. She made her breakthrough in the mystery series "Lost", in which she played Penny Widmore. The storyline surrounding Penny and her boyfriend Desmond has remained in the memories of many fans.

Kratos' son Atreus is played by newcomer Callum Vinson. The rest of the cast of the Amazon series includes, among others: Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Evelyn Miller as Gna, and Island Austin as Thrud.

Showrunner Ronald D. Moore is behind the series. Moore is a true veteran of the TV industry. Among his best-known works is the reboot of "Battlestar Galactica", which is still considered one of the best sci-fi series ever made. He is also known for the series "Outlander", a blend of historical epic and fantasy that has built a large fan base worldwide. Moore also played a key role in cult classics such as "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine". His experience with epic storylines, complex characters, and grand narrative arcs makes him an exciting choice for the adaptation of "God of War".

God of War: Based on the 2018 Video Game

The success story of the "God of War" games began over 20 years ago. The first game in the series was released in 2005 for the PlayStation 2. Even back then, the plot centered on the Spartan warrior Kratos, who is tasked with destroying the god of war, Ares. After several sequels released over the years, the series underwent a narrative reboot in 2018. "God of War" for the PlayStation 4 focused primarily on the relationship between Kratos and Atreus. The creators of the Amazon series apparently took the story about Faye's ashes, as told in the game, as their inspiration.

With this strong source material, an experienced showrunner, and a top-notch cast, the "God of War" series could become a standout hit. However, whether the adaptation can live up to these high expectations will only become clear once the first season premieres. We can hardly wait!
