Matrix 5: Statement from the new director gives hope

After two years of silence, he comments on the Matrix sequel

There is still hope for "The Matrix 5." After the fifth installment of the science fiction franchise was announced two years ago, there was largely silence. Until now. The director and screenwriter Drew Goddard has now confirmed that he is still working on the film. The sequel is "still in the works," he told ScreenRant. "I'm in my writing cave writing. I don't know how long I'll be in that writing cave, but whenever I come out, I'll have news to share."

The filmmaker did not reveal any further details. But at least, the responsible film studio Warner Bros. is apparently still committed to "The Matrix 5." Exactly what the sequel will be about has not yet been announced. So far, those responsible have only indicated that they want to remain true to the original, but at the same time expand the "Matrix" universe. The participation of former lead actors Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Laurence Fishburne is still up in the air. The latter was already not on board for the fourth installment, "The Matrix Resurrections." Presumably, however, the focus will primarily be on new characters anyway. After all, the stories of Neo (Reeves), Trinity (Moss), and Morpheus (Fishburne) have already been explored sufficiently.

The Matrix: A classic

When "The Matrix" hit theaters in 1999, it became a huge hit. Written and directed by the Wachowski siblings, this sci-fi dystopia depicts a world ruled by intelligent machines. Humans have been enslaved and are not even aware of it. They are led to believe that they live in a world similar to our present. In reality, however, it is merely a simulation created by the machines. Neo, played by Keanu Reeves, becomes a figure of hope. A resistance group led by Morpheus sees the hacker as a kind of messiah in the fight against the machines.

The dark cyberpunk aesthetic, the complex script, and the innovative bullet time effects made "The Matrix" a style-defining classic that was also a box office success. The first part grossed $463 million worldwide. Accordingly, the sequels were not long in coming. Just four years later, "The Matrix Reloaded" and "The Matrix Revolutions" followed, also directed by the Wachowskis. "Reloaded" has the highest box office takings of the entire film series, with worldwide revenues of $739 million. In light of this, "Revolutions" fell short of expectations with $427 million.

Regardless of the financial aspect, however, the lavishly staged sequels did not match the quality of the first film in terms of content. The sequels had a hard time with both audiences and critics. As a result, the film franchise was put on hold for the time being. It wasn't until 2021 that a fourth installment, "The Matrix Resurrections," followed. This time, Lana Wachowski was the sole director. However, "Resurrections" only grossed $157 million and failed to make fans of the first installment particularly happy.

Drew Goddard: A creative mind for Matrix 5

Nevertheless "The Matrix" still has enormous potential, as can be seen in "Animatrix". The 2003 anthology explores various aspects of the "Matrix" universe in nine animated short films and shows that the story of Neo is not the only thing Matrix has to offer. A sequel that breaks away from the established characters to tell the story of new ones is likely to be just as exciting. Drew Goddard could be just the right man for the job.

As a writer for TV series such as "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Angel," and "Lost," he was able to demonstrate his flair for multi-layered characters early in his career in the 2000s. He made his feature film directorial debut in 2011 with the ambiguous horror film "The Cabin in the Woods." This was followed in 2016 by an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay for his script for the sci-fi drama "The Martian." And this month sees the release of another highly anticipated sci-fi film, "Project Hail Mary," for which he wrote the screenplay. Goddard is undoubtedly a very creative mind, and we can't wait to see what he comes up with for "The Matrix 5."
