First poster for "Supergirl" released
The new DCU blockbuster opens in cinemas on 26 June 2026
While "Superman" is currently performing well at the box office, the next DC adventure is already waiting in the wings. The first poster for "Supergirl" with Milly Alcock has now been released.
It features "House of the Dragon" star Milly Alcock, who plays the eponymous title heroine. While her famous cousin Kal-El alias Superman stands for hope and the iconic call to "look up", Alcock's character strikes a cheekier, edgier tone. And if the makers are to be believed, "Supergirl" will also be very different than expected. Gunn himself describes his interpretation of Supergirl as much darker, more emotional and more complex. While Kal-El was raised on Earth by loving parents, Kara had to watch helplessly as her world came to an end and her family died.
The plot
The upcoming "Supergirl" film is directly based on the comic book series "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow" by Tom King, which was published in 2021 and 2022 and is celebrated by critics as one of the best Supergirl stories ever. Illustrated by Bilquis Evely and atmospherically colored by Mat Lopes, it offers an unusually adult perspective on the Kryptonian.
The focus is on Kara Zor-El, who seeks refuge in a remote bar far away from Earth – without her full powers, without hope. The loss of Krypton and the feeling that she has become superfluous as Superman's protector have broken her. But her retreat ends abruptly when the young Ruthye appears. She wants revenge for the murder of her father and forces Kara to face up to her responsibilities once again. Together, they travel through a hostile galaxy, encounter borderline moral situations and confront the question of what it really means to be a heroine.
Tom King's approach deliberately breaks with classic superhero clichés. Instead of an untouchable icon, he presents a vulnerable, fallible figure in search of redemption. Supported by poetic, detailed drawings, the story is reminiscent of modern westerns such as "Logan" or "True Grit". There is already speculation as to whether central panels from the comic could serve as a visual blueprint for the film adaptation.
Cast and crew
One of the biggest surprises in the cast of "Supergirl" is Jason Momoa as the intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo. Momoa, known as Aquaman, had already stated in 2023 that he thought this anarchic antihero role was ideal. His appearance is likely to be a highlight for many fans, even if it is still unclear exactly how Lobo will be integrated into the plot.
In addition to Momoa, the cast shines with other well-known actors. David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham take on the roles of Supergirl's parents, while the young Eve Ridley embodies the character Ruthye – the girl who sends Kara Zor-El on her journey. The lead role of Supergirl is played by Milly Alcock, who has already been spotted on the set of James Gunn's Superman movie.
Filming on the new DCU blockbuster took place directly after the "Superman" shoot and has now been completed. The film is currently in post-production. An important advantage: there is still a good year to go until the planned cinema release, which offers enough time for high-quality effects. James Gunn emphasized that he is deliberately focusing on clean post-production in order to avoid the quality problems that Marvel has often been accused of recently. For Gunn, one thing is clear: a good script and well thought-out post-production are crucial to establishing the new DCU in the long term.
A look into the future of Supergirl
With "Supergirl", the new DCU is getting a character who wants to be much more multi-layered than before. Milly Alcock theoretically has everything this new Kara needs: a mixture of vulnerability, defiance and quiet anger. In these times of generic superhero fare, we are therefore hoping for a breath of fresh air –without any CGI thunderstorms or multiverse overkill. And if the DCU wants to be successful, this movie has to deliver: According to Gunn, Superman, Supergirl, Batman and Wonder Woman are to become the cornerstones of the entire franchise. Cinema release is June 26, 2026.
