Work on "Gladys" continues to move forward – and a release date has already been set. According to Deadline magazine, the "Weapons" prequel is scheduled to hit the big screen on September 8, 2028.

The story centers on Aunt Gladys, played by Oscar winner Amy Madigan, whose backstory will be explored. Director Zach Cregger revealed in an interview a few weeks ago that so much extensive material on Aunt Gladys had been created during the production of "Weapons" that it would have exceeded the scope of the main film. Contrary to all expectations, however, someone else is set to take over the directing duties for "Gladys."

In 2028, another film by Zach Cregger titled "The Flood" is also set to hit theaters. More specifically, on August 11, 2028. The science fiction film was originally in development at Netflix but later moved to Warner Bros.

The New Gold Standard of Genre Cinema: Why Zach Cregger Dominates Horror

In the fast-paced world of the film industry, there are moments when a single name suddenly becomes synonymous with innovation and success. Currently, that name is Zach Cregger. While he was once known primarily for his sketch comedy roots, by 2026 he had established himself as one of the most influential directors and screenwriters of our time. His rise is no accident, but the result of a unique flair for modern storytelling and the courage to take calculated risks.

The "Barbarian" Effect and the Power of the Unpredictable

The foundation for his current popularity was laid as early as 2022 with the film "Barbarian". At a time when many horror films relied on tried-and-true clichés, Cregger delivered a work that caught audiences completely off guard with radical twists and an unpredictable narrative structure. This ability to actively surprise the audience has earned him enormous trust among fans. Viewers now know that a Cregger film never follows the classic formula, which is a rare quality in today's era of sequels and remakes.

This "Pulp Fiction"-style approach to the horror genre is Cregger's trademark. He draws on his experience from the comedy group "The Whitest Kids U' Know" to use timing to perfection. For Cregger, horror and comedy are "two sides of the same coin": both require a precise sense of when to build anticipation and when to release it (often with a shock or a laugh). "Barbarian" proved that with a small budget of $4.5 million and a completely unconventional structure, you can captivate an audience of millions worldwide.

Hit Series and the Oscar Glory of "Weapons"

His popularity was further cemented in 2025 with the release of his mystery-horror film "Weapons". The film was not only a commercial success, grossing over $270 million worldwide on a budget of $38 million, but it also garnered rave reviews. The fact that Amy Madigan even won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in this film proved once and for all that Cregger is capable of combining genre material with world-class acting depth. He manages to lead complex ensembles – including stars like Josh Brolin and Julia Garner – in such a way that the atmosphere of terror remains palpable at all times.

The Hope of Franchise Fans: Resident Evil

Another factor contributing to his current status is the enormous trust major studios place in him. Sony Pictures has essentially given him a free hand for the new "Resident Evil" film, set to be released in September 2026. Early test screenings suggest that he is finally bringing the legendary video game series to life in the dark and intense way fans have been hoping for for decades. He eschews over-the-top CGI, relying instead on practical effects and palpable tension. This connection to the community and his understanding of a brand's essence have made him a pop culture favorite.

A Director with a Long-Term Vision

In summary, Zach Cregger's popularity is based on the perfect blend of technical craftsmanship, creative originality, and a deep respect for his audience. He restores viewers' sense that genuine discoveries are still possible in cinema. In an industry that often plays it safe, Zach Cregger is the exciting exception to the rule.
