SpaceGodzilla in Godzilla x Kong 3
Matthew Modine hinted at this on his Instagram account
Fans of the MonsterVerse can rejoice: "Godzilla x Kong 3: Supernova" will be released in cinemas on March 26, 2027. Now there are increasing indications that our heroes could actually have to deal with SpaceGodzilla!
The source of this rumor is actor Matthew Modine, who posted both the Japanese poster for "Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla" and a scene from the film on his Instagram account. Whether this is a coincidence or a clever hint is open to speculation. In the Japanese "Godzilla" film series of the 1990s, SpaceGodzilla was introduced as a dangerous variation of Godzilla. Its origin: Godzilla's DNA is taken into space, pulled through a black hole, spat out by a white hole and altered there by the energy of a supernova. The result is a powerful, crystal-studded monster with supernatural powers such as telekinesis and the ability to create crystal formations.
A potential appearance of SpaceGodzilla in "Godzilla x Kong 3" would be a real sensation: it would be the first monster from the so-called "Heisei era" to find its way into the modern MonsterVerse. Previous Kaiju such as Mothra, Rodan or King Ghidorah all come from the older "Showa era". With its impressive power, SpaceGodzilla would be a worthy opponent for the duo of Godzilla and Kong – and would take the action-packed spectacle of the series to a new level.
There is also initial speculation that Destoroyah could also cause plenty of chaos. What exactly the two titans will ultimately face is still being kept under wraps. What is certain, however, is that the threat will be apocalyptic – and take the MonsterVerse in a new direction. It is very likely that new iconic Kaijus will make an appearance that have not yet appeared in the US franchise. The Hollow Earth is also likely to play a role again – an even deeper look into this primeval world has been announced for part 3. New monsters? Forgotten titans? Perhaps even more clues to the origins of Godzilla and Kong? The exciting setting offers plenty of potential.
Cast and crew
But it's not just the Kaijus who are getting a boost – the cast is also receiving prominent reinforcements. The acting ensemble is led by Matthew Modine, known from classics such as "Full Metal Jacket" and the hit series "Stranger Things". He takes on the role of a general who is to play a central role in the fight against the new threat. Also new is Kaitlyn Dever, who is currently impressing as Abby in the second season of "The Last of Us". Her character should not only bring emotional depth, but also play a decisive role in the course of the plot.
In addition, "Sinners" actor Jack O'Connell, Delroy Lindo and Alycia Debnam-Carey are joining the cast – the latter is known from "Fear the Walking Dead" and the Netflix mini-series "Apple Cider Vinegar", in which she was already seen alongside Dever. Whether established characters such as Brian Tyree Henry and Rebecca Hall will appear again remains to be seen. What is certain, however, is the comeback of Dan Stevens, who will once again be seen as trapper Beasley.
A particular highlight for genre fans is likely to be the latest addition to the cast: "Jurassic Park" icon Sam Neill is joining the MonsterVerse. However, the exact role he will be taking on is still a secret.
Part 3 will now be directed by Grant Sputore, who has already proven his talent for dense atmosphere and big themes with the sci-fi thriller "I Am Mother". He will be supported by screenwriter Dave Callaham. He was involved in films such as "Shang-Chi", "Mortal Kombat" and "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" – as well as 2014's "Godzilla". Not bad prerequisites for the new project. Filming on "Godzilla x Kong 3: Supernova" has been underway in Australia since April this year. The worldwide theatrical release is scheduled for March 26, 2027.
