When will the new Minecraft movie be released?
The release date for "A Minecraft Movie Squared" has been set for a while now. However, a little patience is still required: The sequel hits theaters on July 23, 2027. While no specific plot details have been revealed yet, there are already some clues. In our concise movie preview, we've taken a closer look at the known details and initial theories.
A Minecraft Movie
With "A Minecraft Movie," one of the world's most successful video games has made the leap to the big screen. The film adaptation is based on the sandbox game "Minecraft," which has captivated millions of players since its release and is known for its open-world gameplay and distinctive block graphics.
The plot centers on characters who find themselves in the so-called Overworld of "Minecraft" and must face numerous challenges there. The film incorporates many familiar elements of the game – from the iconic landscapes to creatures like Creepers and zombies, all the way to the creative building that has made "Minecraft" popular worldwide. With a mix of adventure, humor, and fantasy, the film appeals to both longtime fans and a broad family audience.
"A Minecraft Movie" turned out to be a real box office hit – its earnings at the box office exceeded even the wildest expectations. In 2025, only "Lilo & Stitch" and the Chinese blockbuster "Ne Zha 2" were more successful worldwide. It was therefore only a matter of time before the "Minecraft" franchise continued in film form.
The Cast of A Minecraft Movie
The cast also played a key role in the success of "A Minecraft Movie." The main character, Steve, is played by Jack Black, while Jason Momoa stars as Garrett (also known as "The Garbage Man"). Additionally, Emma Myers as Natalie, Sebastian Hansen as Henry, and Danielle Brooks as Dawn round out the main cast. Jennifer Coolidge, who plays the eccentric Marlene, also provided many of the funniest moments.
First hints about the sequel's plot?
In October 2025, Warner released the first official poster for the sequel. It features two pickaxes, but one small detail in particular catches the eye: a slight purple shimmer. For many Minecraft players, this is a possible hint at the End – one of the game's three dimensions and the home of the dreaded Ender Dragon.
So could the Ender Dragon become the main antagonist in the second film? Jared Hess has already explained that numerous well-known elements from the game didn't make it into the first film. Therefore, an appearance by the legendary foe in the sequel is certainly conceivable. We're excited to see when the first trailer arrives. As soon as the trailer is available, you'll find it in the KinoCheck app and on our YouTube channel.
