All about the new clash between the movie giants Godzilla and Kong!
Godzilla and King Kong: two names that have made film history. Two titans that destroy entire cities and not only cause earthquakes, but also shake things up in the world of movies. After the huge successes of "Godzilla vs. Kong" and "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire", one thing is certain: the MonsterVerse saga is set to continue! "Godzilla x Kong 3" is in the pipeline – so let us tell you why this movie deserves to be at the top of your watchlist. Welcome to the new movie preview!
A Review of the MonsterVerse
Monster fans had to wait nine years for a sequel after Peter Jackson's "King Kong", but then the modern MonsterVerse began. In 2014, Warner Bros. and Legendary kicked off the blockbuster franchise with "Godzilla", which is still enjoying success to this day.
Since then, "Kong: Skull Island", "Godzilla: King of the Monsters" and the epic confrontation in "Godzilla vs. Kong" have followed. Apple TV+ treated series fans to "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters" and finally, in 2024, the action-packed "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" was released. The MonsterVerse has been on everyone's lips again ever since. Now the journey continues – and "Godzilla x Kong 3" promises nothing short of perhaps the biggest monster showdown of all time.
New Threats for Godzilla and Kong
What exactly lies ahead for the two titans is still being kept under wraps. What is known, though, is that the menace will be apocalyptic and steer the MonsterVerse in a new direction. It is very likely that new iconic Kaijus will make an appearance that have not yet featured in the US franchise.
A hot topic of discussion in various fan forums is a possible comeback for Gigan, a bird-like cyborg with spinning saw blades – or Destoroyah, one of the most powerful opponents from the Japanese original. In "Godzilla vs. Destoroyah", not only did Destoroyah kill Godzilla's son, he also stretched the king of the monsters to his limits.
The Hollow Earth is also expected to be of importance again – an even more profound insight into this primeval world has been announced for Part 3. New monsters? Forgotten titans? Perhaps even more clues to the origins of Godzilla and Kong? The thrilling setting offers plenty of potential.
The New Cast
It's not just the Kaiju side that is being upgraded. The cast is gaining new members as well – with some real top-class talent. The cast includes Matthew Modine, known from "Full Metal Jacket" and "Stranger Things". He will portray a general who plays a key role in the fight against a new threat.
Also part of the cast is Kaitlyn Dever, who is currently impressing as Abby in the second season of "The Last of Us". Her character is intended to add emotional depth and drive the plot forward. Other new additions include Jack O'Connell, Delroy Lindo and Alycia Debnam-Carey, known for example from "Fear the Walking Dead". She has already been in front of the camera with Kaitlyn Dever in the Netflix mini-series "Apple Cider Vinegar". It isn't clear yet whether familiar faces such as Brian Tyree Henry and Rebecca Hall will be back. However, Dan Stevens will return as Trapper Beasley – a crowd favorite from the last part. The latest addition to the cast should also please genre fans in particular: "Jurassic Park" legend Sam Neill is now part of the MonsterVerse as well. However, it is not yet known in which role.
A New Director Takes Over
After the success of "The New Empire", director Adam Wingard is leaving the franchise for now to devote himself to his new horror project "Onslaught". Instead, part 3 will be directed by Grant Sputore, who has already proven his knack for intense atmosphere and big themes with the sci-fi thriller "I Am Mother".
He's supported by screenwriter Dave Callaham. He was involved in movies such as "Shang-Chi", "Mortal Kombat" and "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" – as well as 2014's "Godzilla". These are not bad prospects for the new project!
When Will the Movie Open in Theaters?
Filming on "Godzilla x Kong 3" has begun in Australia in April 2025. The worldwide theatrical release is scheduled for March 26, 2027. A long wait, but also plenty of time for us to watch the entire MonsterVerse all over again and immerse ourselves in exciting theories. Here's a little tip to kill some time: if you haven't seen the latest movie from Japan yet, the Oscar-winning "Godzilla Minus One" is available to stream on Netflix and is highly recommended!
