The trailer for "Avengers: Doomsday" was unveiled at CinemaCon. The footage has not yet been released. But here's what various U.S. media outlets report was shown.

The film opens with the founder of the X-Men: Professor Xavier. He is in the X-Mansion. The building lies in ruins. Then Doctor Doom appears—without his mask. In other words, we see former "Iron Man" actor Robert Downey Jr. in the role of the supervillain Victor von Doom. He announces an event that cannot be stopped.

Even Thor seems to stand no chance against Doctor Doom

Several well-known Marvel characters appear in the following scenes. Among them is Ben Grimm, aka The Thing. The "Fantastic Four" hero attempts to form an alliance with Wakanda. Things get intense between Shang-Chi and Gambit: the two engage in a duel. Gambit is played by Channing Tatum. Rebecca Romijn, meanwhile, returns to her role from the first "X-Men" films. As the shape-shifter Mystique, she faces off against "Thunderbolts" protagonist Yelena.

The highlight is likely to be the battle between Thor and Doom. Here, it becomes clear just how powerful Doom is. When the villain is attacked, he stops Thor with a mere wave of his hand. Elsewhere, it becomes apparent that the mighty God of Thunder is clearly afraid in the face of the immense threat posed by Doom. But at the end of the trailer, he gets a surprise: the return of Steve Rogers, aka Captain America—who immediately grabs Thor's legendary hammer.

A massive star-studded cast – and the return of the Russos

The new Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbuster features a massive star-studded cast. The cast includes, among others: Chris Hemsworth, Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Simu Liu, Florence Pugh, Kelsey Grammer, Joseph Quinn, David Harbour, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, James Marsden, Channing Tatum, Robert Downey Jr., and Chris Evans.

Anthony and Joe Russo are once again directing "Avengers: Doomsday." The duo previously directed the extremely successful "Avengers" blockbusters "Infinity War" and "Endgame." Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely are responsible for the screenplay. Speaking about the supervillain Doctor Doom, Joe Russo told The Hollywood Reporter:

"He's not simply a villain — he's one of the most complex Marvel characters. He's always three moves ahead."

Avengers: Endgame returns to theaters – with additional scenes

During the Walt Disney Studios presentation at CinemaCon, however, it wasn't just new footage from "Avengers: Doomsday" that was shown. There was also an interesting announcement regarding "Avengers: Endgame." The film returns to theaters on September 25, 2026. The re-release had already been announced. Now, however, directors Anthony and Joe Russo have revealed that the film will include additional scenes. Not bad, considering that the original version already runs over three hours.

Currently, "Avengers: Endgame" is the second-highest-grossing film of all time. With a worldwide box office total of $2.7 billion, it trails just behind the leader, "Avatar" ($2.9 billion). After the re-release, however, "Avatar" may be knocked off its throne. After all, the new scenes now give audiences an additional incentive to watch "Avengers: Endgame" again in theaters. Once "Avengers: Doomsday" hits theaters, though, that potential record could quickly become obsolete. After all, expectations for the new Marvel Cinematic Universe film are enormous. The question is probably not whether the blockbuster will be successful, but how successful it will be. We'll have to be patient for a little while longer, though: "Avengers: Doomsday" hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
