After years of development and numerous delays, the time has finally come: according to Deadline, the "Red Sonja" reboot will be released in cinemas this year after all.

However, only in the UK and Ireland for the time being. The reason for this is the British publisher Signature Entertainment, which was able to secure the distribution rights from Millennium Media. However, it is likely that the film could also be released in other international markets where agreements have already been reached.

Those responsible at Signature Entertainment are enthusiastic about the new "Red Sonja" adaptation.

"Red Sonja epitomizes the kind of film we're looking for at Signature – an epic story in a fantasy-laden world with a strong commercial feel to its execution, which made it immediately appealing to us."

The remake is based on the popular comic book series about the legendary warrior Red Sonja. She must assemble a powerful squad of unusual fighters to challenge the tyrannical Emperor Draygan and his deadly ally Dark Annisia. The film is directed by MJ Bassett, who was previously responsible for "Silent Hill: Revelation 3D" and "Solomon Kane".

The cast is also impressive: "Revenge" actress Matilda Lutz slips into the role of the fearless warrior. She is accompanied by "The Umbrelle Academy" star Robert Sheehan, Veronica Ferres, Wallis Day, Michael Bisping and Luca Pasqualino, among others.

The story was already filmed in 1985 with Brigitte Nielsen in the leading role. In contrast to this, however, the new version will be more closely based on the comics and incorporate modern action elements. We are excited!

Film tips for "Red Sonja" fans: Epic fantasy adventures with strong heroines

If you're a fan of "Red Sonja" (1985), then you're probably looking for more films with brave female warriors, epic battles and fantastic worlds. Luckily, there are some movies that have a similar feel. Here are some great alternatives!

Conan the Barbarian (1982) & Conan the Destroyer (1984)

Since Red Sonja is originally from the Conan universe, the two "Conan" movies starring Arnold Schwarzenegger are obvious choices. "Conan the Barbarian" is an epic classic with a dark atmosphere, brutal battles and a legendary soundtrack by Basil Poledouris. Arnold Schwarzenegger plays the legendary Cimmerian, who seeks revenge and fights his way through a hostile world. This was followed two years later by "Conan the Destroyer", which takes a somewhat lighter-hearted tone and incorporates more fantasy elements. Both films offer exactly what fans of "Red Sonja" love: sword fights, magic and epic adventures.

Krull (1983)

If you like fantasy with a dash of science fiction, then "Krull" is a great choice. The movie tells the story of a hero who must rescue a kidnapped princess using a magical weapon, the glaive. The mixture of medieval fantasy and futuristic elements makes this movie unique.

Legend (1985)

Ridley Scott's fantasy film "Legend" with Tom Cruise and Tim Curry as the devilish demon captivates with breathtaking images and a fairytale atmosphere. The story about a courageous heroine who fights against evil could be just the thing for "Red Sonja" fans.

Xena: Warrior Princess (1995-2001)

Although not a classic movie recommendation, this cult series with Lucy Lawless is an absolute must for fans of Red Sonja. "Xena: Warrior Princess" tells the story of a former warrior who fights for good. The series offers exciting adventures, epic battles and an iconic main character.

Solomon Kane (2009)

Based on the stories of Robert E. Howard, the creator of "Conan" and "Red Sonja", this dark film follows the swordsman "Solomon Kane", who wants to leave his past as a brutal warrior behind him. But evil forces him back into battle. The dark, atmospheric production makes the film an insider tip for fans of sword-and-sorcery fantasy.

Conclusion

Whether classic sword-and-sorcery films or series with strong female warriors - as a fan of "Red Sonja", there are many great alternatives. Whether you prefer the epic style of "Conan", the fairytale feel of "The Legend" or the gritty action of "Solomon Kane" – these films guarantee exciting entertainment!
