Spider-Man Brand New Day: What the record-breaking trailer reveals about the new Spider-Man movie
Jean Grey, X-Men, Punisher & Co. – here's what you need to know
Few trailers are currently the subject of as much speculation as the "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" trailer. Especially as it is now officially the most successful of all time. Within 24 hours, the first trailer for the new "Spider-Man" film starring Tom Holland achieved 718.6 million views.
The previous leader in movie trailers was "Deadpool & Wolverine" with 365 million views in 24 hours. "Brand New Day" has now almost doubled this figure. It has also overtaken the previous record holder par excellence: "Grand Theft Auto VI". The trailer for the video game achieved 475 million views in 24 hours last year. This makes the trailer for "Brand New Day" not only the most successful in the film sector, but the most successful in general.
Questions and speculation: What you need to know about the Spider-Man trailer
In view of this success, the trailer is generating a lot of discussion - and questions. Is Sadie Sink already in the trailer, albeit in disguise? Is there any indication that she is actually playing Jean Grey aka Dark Phoenix in the movie? Has another X-Men member snuck into the trailer unnoticed? And who are all the enemies that Spider-Man fights? We take a look at the questions and speculation surrounding the "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" trailer, which already shows that a whole new chapter is beginning in Peter Parker's life:

Is Sadie Sink seen as Jean Grey in the trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day?
Ever since it was announced about a year ago that "Stranger Things" star Sadie Sink would be starring in "Spider-Man: Brand New Day", there has been speculation about her character. Some suspect that it is Peter Parker's great love Mary Jane Watson aka "MJ". If only because of the red hair that Sadie Sink has in common with the character from the comics. However, there is already an alternative version of "MJ" in the form of Zendaya's character Michelle Jones-Watson, who had a relationship with Peter. A second "MJ" would be possible, but also somewhat confusing.
Many therefore suspect another red-haired celebrity from the Marvel comics: Jean Grey. The mutant with telekinetic and telepathic powers was part of the X-Men in the comics from the very beginning and fought against evil as Marvel Girl alongside Cyclops, Beast, Angel and Iceman. Years later, she became an overpowering threat as Dark Phoenix - as seen on the big screen in the films "X-Men: The Last Stand" (played by Famke Janssen) and "Dark Phoenix" (Sophie Turner).
We never see Sadie Sink's face in the "Brand New Day" trailer. Nevertheless, there is now speculation that she appears in the trailer. What's more, it is suspected that the mysterious hooded figure is Sadie Sink in the role of Jean Grey.
Especially as it can be seen immediately beforehand how someone apparently takes mental possession of other people in front of Spider-Man's eyes - which would correspond to Jean Grey's telepathic powers. Perhaps it's even a first hint at her development into Dark Phoenix. Of course, it's all still very speculative. However, it is certain that the X-Men mutants will play a central role in the future phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is quite possible that an important foundation stone will already be laid in this way in "Brand New Day".
Is there another X-Men member in the Spider-Man trailer?
Maybe. When Spider-Man crashes into the window of a bus, a young woman with headphones and a striking white streak of hair is seen sitting inside the bus for a moment. Given her look, comic connoisseurs must immediately think of Rogue. The mutant, who can absorb the life forces of her fellow human beings by touch, is also a member of the X-Men and was played by Anna Paquin in the "X-Men" films from the 2000s. So will a new incarnation of Rogue be introduced in "Spider-Man: Brand New Day"? It can't be ruled out. But maybe it's just a nice homage intended as a tongue-in-cheek gift for X-Men fans.
Who does Spider-Man fight in the trailer?
The best-known opponent is probably Frank Castle aka the Punisher, played by Jon Bernthal as in the Netflix series of the same name. Although the anti-hero with the skull shirt has his own brutal methods of fighting evil, he is sure to become an ally of Spider-Man - even if they clash in the trailer. More dangerous are the mysterious ninjas in red, who are probably The Hand. The deadly martial arts army was already present in Netflix's "Daredevil" series and is fueling the hopes of many fans that Daredevil will also be seen in the new "Spider-Man" film alongside the Punisher.
Another opponent in the trailer is Mac Gargan, aka Scorpion, who has been wreaking havoc in the comics since the 1960s. The villain, who swats Spider-Man away with his metallic scorpion tail, is played by Michael Mando, who already appeared as Mac Gargan in "Spider-Man: Homecoming". Two other enemies taken from the comics who appear briefly in the trailer are Boomerang and Tarantula. Both are only seen briefly, but are shown in a special way. The scenes are each a subtle homage to two covers of the "Spider-Man" comics. Here you can see the comic cover and scene in direct comparison:
Homage to the birth of Spider-Man
Speaking of homage. One of the best scenes from the trailer shows Spider-Man swinging through New York with a person under his arm. Sounds incidental at first. In fact, this moment is another very special gift to the fans of the "Spider-Man" comics. Because the scene is based on the cover of "Amazing Fantasy" No. 15 - and thus the birth of Spider-Man. This is the legendary comic in which Peter Parker alias Spider-Man made his very first appearance in August 1962.
In it, the world learned for the first time how the clever, shy teenager is bitten by a radioactive spider and develops into a superhero thanks to the superpowers he acquires as a result. The film thus bows deeply to the roots of its protagonist and at the same time opens a brand new chapter in Spider-Man's life. We will soon find out what else the big-screen adventure with Tom Holland has to offer: "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" opens in cinemas on July 31, 2026.
