2025 kicked off a new era for DC with James Gunn's "Superman" – and just a year later, the next big step awaits us: "Supergirl"! But what can we expect from this superhero blockbuster? The first reactions have arrived and offer a glimpse into the film. Critics have shared details about the movie's tone while also discussing the performance of lead actress Milly Alcock.

Here's What the First Reactions Are Saying

In terms of tone, "Supergirl" is most often compared to the "Mad Max" franchise or "Guardians of the Galaxy." The film is frequently described as "emotional" and "entertaining." However, audiences probably shouldn't expect a direct page-to-screen adaptation of the comic book "Woman of Tomorrow," as the film reportedly makes some changes to the source material.

There is one point on which everyone seems to agree: according to all early reactions, Milly Alcock delivers a standout performance. One example of this is the reaction from David Crow of the website Den of Geek:

"Milly Alcock absolutely owns the role and will change our idea of Supergirl forever."

In addition to Alcock, Jason Momoa as Lobo is also being highlighted. The actor seems to be clearly enjoying his role. Overall, the initial reactions are mostly positive. The general consensus: While "Supergirl" isn't a masterpiece, it's an entertaining and emotional experience featuring a strong performance by Milly Alcock. It should also be noted, however, that initial reactions tend to be somewhat more positive.

Here's what Supergirl is about

The official plot description reads as follows: When an unexpected and ruthless adversary strikes too close to home, Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, reluctantly joins forces with an unlikely companion on an epic, interstellar journey of vengeance and justice. Joining Alcock in the cast are Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, and Jason Momoa.

You won't have to wait much longer for the premiere of "Supergirl." The DC blockbuster hits theaters on June 26. Check out the latest trailer here to get in the mood for the movie:

Who is Milly Alcock?

Even though Milly Alcock may still be a relatively new face to some moviegoers, the Australian actress is already one of the industry's most exciting rising stars. She made her international breakthrough in 2022 with the HBO series "House of the Dragon." There, she played the young Rhaenyra Targaryen and quickly became a fan favorite. Although she appeared only in the first few episodes of the fantasy series, Alcock left a lasting impression and was praised by critics for her charismatic performance.

Most recently, she appeared in the Netflix series "Sirens," among other projects. With "Supergirl," however, she is now set to take the biggest step of her career to date. She made her debut as Kara Zor-El in James Gunn's DC Universe as early as 2025. Her first appearance as Supergirl did not come in a standalone film, but rather in "Superman."

The film marked the official reboot of the DC cinematic universe and introduced David Corenswet as the new Man of Steel. At the same time, director James Gunn took the opportunity to introduce other key characters from the new DCU. Alcock's brief appearance as Supergirl sparked a lot of buzz at the time and made it clear that Warner Bros. had big plans.

While "Superman" established the optimistic and hopeful side of the new DC Universe, "Supergirl" now seems to be taking a slightly different path. James Gunn emphasized some time ago that the films shouldn't feel too similar. Rather, each DCU production should find its own tone. That's likely also the idea behind the next DC film following "Supergirl." With "Clayface," we can expect a true horror film. But see for yourself: You can watch the first trailer here:

The Comic Book Source Material: Woman of Tomorrow

"Supergirl" is based on the acclaimed comic book series "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow" by writer Tom King. The story features a version of Kara Zor-El that differs from many earlier portrayals. The source material combines classic science fiction elements with an emotional road trip and is considered by many fans to be one of the best Supergirl stories ever.

Even though initial reactions suggest the film makes some changes to the source material, many elements will certainly remain intact. Whether "Supergirl" ultimately lives up to the quality of its acclaimed comic book source material will become clear at the end of June. However, early reviews offer hope that DC could score its next hit following "Superman."
