Sequel to the Netflix Hit: KPop Demon Hunters 2 in Talks

There are also plans for a live-action film, a series, and a musical

Since its release in the summer, the Netflix hit "KPop Demon Hunters" has become a worldwide phenomenon. With over 236 million views, it is currently the streaming service's most-watched title. That's reason enough for "KPop Demon Hunters 2", which, according to The Hollywood Reporter, is currently in talks.

What the movie's about and when it will be released on Netflix is currently unknown. The project is still in a very early stage of development anyway. Both directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans have expressed interest in a sequel. However, they emphasize that without close collaboration between Netflix and Sony, the franchise has no future.

While critics believe that Sony let go of the blockbuster hit too soon, the numbers tell a different story: Netflix covered the entire production budget of 100 million dollars, paid an additional 25 million dollars in licensing fees, and secured Sony a profit margin of up to 30 percent – twice the industry standard. Although Netflix holds the exclusive merchandising rights, Sony benefits from soundtrack sales as well as music publishing fees.

Speaking of soundtracks: With four songs simultaneously in the Billboard Hot 100 Top 10, led by the mega-hit "Golden" by Huntrix, "KPop Demon Hunters" has also made history in the music industry. Fans are in for a treat in the coming years, as in addition to the sequel, a live-action film adaptation, a series, and even a stage musical are in the works.
