It's official: "Euphoria" is over. No sooner had the final episode of Season 3 premiered than series creator Sam Levinson announced the end on Popcast. So it's official: The season finale "In God We Trust" is also the finale of the entire series. Shortly thereafter, the definitive end of the series starring Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, and the rest of the cast was also confirmed by HBO, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

There had already been speculation about the end of "Euphoria" – in part due to statements by Zendaya. The lead actress had recently stated that she expected the series to conclude after the current episodes. In total, "Euphoria" ran for three seasons and included 24 regular episodes as well as two special episodes that aired between the first and second seasons.

Stories from a fictional town

The HBO series centers on a group of teenagers who initially attend high school in the fictional California town of East Highland. Among them is the drug-addicted protagonist Rue Bennett, played by Zendaya. The series' cast also included Sydney Sweeney, Jacob Elordi, Hunter Schafer, Maude Apatow, Barbie Ferreira, Alexa Demie, Nika King, Storm Reid, Algee Smith, and Colman Domingo, as well as the late actors Eric Dane and Angus Cloud. While Eric Dane was honored at the start of Season 3, the series finale also featured a tribute to Angus Cloud.

The third season of "Euphoria" also features a few new faces, including Hollywood star Sharon Stone and Spanish singer Rosalía, who recently caused a sensation with her internationally acclaimed album "Lux." There is also a time jump: the plot of the third season picks up five years later. Among other things, the story revolves around Rue's immense debt, which she attempts to pay off in an unusual way. The trailer reveals what else viewers can expect in Season 3 of "Euphoria":

Zendaya and co.: In-demand stars

The series ending after just three seasons likely has to do with the fact that it's becoming increasingly difficult to coordinate the busy cast's schedules for another season. Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, and Jacob Elordi, in particular, have become hugely in-demand stars in recent years. Zendaya has appeared in numerous roles and she is involved in two massive movie franchises: the "Spider-Man" and the "Dune" films. Sydney Sweeney is also doing well, having scored a huge success as the lead actress in "The Housemaid." And Jacob Elordi recently caused a stir with "Frankenstein": The actor played Frankenstein's monster in Guillermo del Toro's film – and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his performance.

Who knows how long it would have taken to get all the stars in front of the camera for a fourth season of "Euphoria." Even with the first three seasons, the gaps between each season grew longer and longer. The HBO series premiered back in 2019. After that, it took about two and a half years for the second season to air. Then, over four years passed between the second and third seasons. When asked about this, Francesca Orsi, head of HBO drama series and films, told The Hollywood Reporter:

"It was important that everyone felt season three was moving the story forward in a meaningful and ambitious way. When Sam began sharing how much more expansive the world of the show would feel this season, there was genuine excitement about returning."

As it now stands, there will be no further return. The third season remains the last of a series that generated a lot of buzz during its run and sparked controversial debates, not least because of the nude scenes. "Euphoria" will also be remembered as an unusual coming-of-age series that stood out from the crowd with its distinctive style. Its many fans will certainly miss "Euphoria."
