Dexter Resurrection Season 2: Succession Star Brian Cox Becomes the New York Ripper
There is already initial information about the release date of the second season
Dexter Morgan's new opponent has been revealed! According to multiple media reports, "Succession" star Brian Cox will take on the role of the New York Ripper! With this casting, the second season of the sequel series "Dexter: Resurrection" is slowly taking shape. Additionally, initial details about the release date have already been revealed.
According to the industry magazine Deadline, Cox will be part of the regular cast for the second season. At the same time, initial details about the character have already been shared. According to these details, the New York Ripper "terrified the city years ago." By the start of Season 2, however, the killer is no longer active—which doesn't stop him from continuing to torment the survivors of his past killing spree.
Brian Cox as the New York Ripper
The Ripper was already mentioned several times in the first season of "Resurrection" (originally titled "Dexter: Resurrection"). Spoiler for the first-season finale: By the end, the killer had already been hinted at as an upcoming antagonist. Through Leon Prater's (Peter Dinklage) files, we learn that he knows the killer's true identity. One of his files bears the name "Don Frampt, New York Ripper."
For a long time, "Dexter" fans speculated whether a familiar character might be behind this name. One hot candidate was Jonah Mitchell (Brando Eaton) , the son of the Trinity Killer from the fourth season of the original series. And time and again, Dexter's landlord Blessing (Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine) was also suspected. With the casting of Cox, however, these speculations have now been put to rest.
Cox, meanwhile, is well-versed in portraying a serial killer. In Michael Mann's "Manhunter," the actor once played the most famous fictional cannibal: Hannibal Lecter. He is also best known for his role as Logan Roy in the award-winning HBO series "Succession."
When will Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 premiere?
Soon, the Emmy-winning actor will also be able to showcase his talents in "Dexter." Filming for the series is set to begin in April 2026. According to initial reports, the premiere of the second season could be in October 2026—just in time for the 20th anniversary of "Dexter"!

Brian Cox and his most famous roles
It's no coincidence that an actor like Brian Cox has been cast in such a central role—after all, he has been one of the most distinctive character actors in film and television for decades. He gained international fame not only through his iconic portrayal of media mogul Logan Roy in "Succession," but also through numerous film appearances. For example, he appeared in "Braveheart" and played the military strategist William Stryker in "X-Men 2." Fittingly, Cox was also part of the cast of David Fincher's "Zodiac." Additionally, he was part of the cast of the historical epic "Troy" and also appeared in "The Bourne Supremacy."
The TV Phenomenon "Dexter"
Since its debut in 2006, the series "Dexter" has evolved into a true pop culture phenomenon. At its center is blood spatter analyst Dexter Morgan, who works for the Miami Police Department—while simultaneously leading a secret double life as a serial killer. In doing so, he follows a strict code taught to him by his adoptive father, Harry: He only kills people who are murderers themselves and have evaded justice. The performance of lead actor Michael C. Hall is undoubtedly a key factor in the series' success.
Another central character is Dexter's sister Debra Morgan (Jennifer Carpenter) , who also works as a police officer. Iconic antagonists include, for example, the Refrigerator Killer from Season 1 or the Trinity Killer (John Lithgow). The blend of crime thriller, psychological drama, and dark humor made "Dexter" an extraordinary series that built a loyal fan base over the years.
It is precisely this tension between moral ambivalence and the classic serial killer narrative that has made "Dexter" an enduring TV phenomenon. The very concept of a serial killer as the protagonist took the anti-hero trend of the 2000s to the extreme—and thus struck a chord with the spirit of the times. Discussions about ethics, justice, and vigilante justice are an integral part of the series. Paradoxically, even the often-criticized original finale contributed to the series' longevity, as it truly fueled the desire for a sequel.
The Sequel to Dexter
This desire was finally fulfilled with "Dexter: New Blood," which picks up years after the original ending and shows Dexter in a new setting. The series picked up on loose plot threads and brought the character back to the forefront of modern TV productions. Later, "Dexter: Original Sin" also expanded the universe by focusing on Dexter's youth and the origins of his "code." However, the prequel has since been canceled.
With "Resurrection," the franchise took the next step and continued the story from "New Blood." We can now look forward to seeing what impact the introduction of the New York Ripper will have on Season 2.
