Keanu Reeves could return for "Matrix 5"

There is no start date yet

Good news for all fans of "The Matrix": Part 5 is still being planned – and according to initial rumors, Keanu Reeves could also return as Neo! The well-connected industry insider Daniel Richtman reports that Reeves is to be included in at least a smaller role.

How exactly this is to be reconciled with the end of "Matrix Resurrections" – in which Neo's story actually seemed to be completed – remains to be seen. It is likely that Reeves will no longer act as the central protagonist, but rather as a mentor or spiritual guide for a new generation. It is conceivable that his return would have a symbolic character: as a link between the old and the new "Matrix" universe. Such a solution would also satisfy fans who would struggle with a complete break. After all, Keanu Reeves is the figurehead of the science fiction series.

According to Warner Bros, "Matrix 5" will mark a new start for the franchise – but without denying the roots of the series. Drew Goddard, who has made a name for himself with works such as "The Cabin in the Woods" or his work on series such as "Lost" and "Buffy", is the creative director this time. Jesse Ehrman, executive at Warner, describes Goddard's concept as a "fantastic way to continue the world" and at the same time a tribute to the Wachowskis' original vision. The new film is intended to pick up old fans as well as attract new viewers.

Although "Matrix 5" has been officially announced, there are no concrete details about the start of filming or release date as yet. If the project develops quickly, a cinema release would be realistic in 2026 or 2027 at the earliest. Information on the rest of the cast, the setting or the central plot is also still pending, although Michael B. Jordan is currently being considered for the lead role.

Movie tips for fans of "Matrix": For anyone looking for dark sci-fi worlds, philosophical depth and spectacular action

Since the release of "The Matrix" in 1999, the film has not only revolutionized action cinema, but also inspired a wave of works dealing with reality, artificial intelligence and the power of free will. If you're a fan of the "Matrix" trilogy and are looking for films that explore similar themes and visual styles, here are seven exciting recommendations.

Inception (2010, director: Christopher Nolan)

Few films play with levels of reality as skillfully as "Inception". Leonardo DiCaprio leads a team of specialists who penetrate other people's dreams – with the aim of manipulating their thoughts. Visually breathtaking and full of mind-bending moments, "Inception" is strongly reminiscent of "The Matrix", particularly due to the interplay of action, technology and philosophical questions: What is real – and who decides?

Ghost in the Shell (1995, director: Mamoru Oshii)

This Japanese anime is considered one of the biggest influences on the Wachowskis in the creation of "Matrix". In a future in which humans merge with machines, a cyborg investigator questions her own identity and origins. The dark cyberpunk aesthetic, the hacker theme and the metaphysical questions make this film a must-see for "Matrix" fans. (Even if the 2017 remake with Scarlett Johansson is visually appealing, the original remains much stronger in terms of content).

Equilibrium (2002, director: Kurt Wimmer)

Often referred to as a "Matrix clone", "Equilibrium" nevertheless has its own appeal. In a dystopian future, feeling is suppressed by drugs – anyone who shows emotion is considered a threat. Christian Bale plays an elite agent who begins to question the system. The elegant, choreographed "Gun Kata" action in particular is strongly reminiscent of "The Matrix". An insider tip for fans of stylized martial arts.

Dark City (1998, director: Alex Proyas)

Released a year before "Matrix", but much less well-known: "Dark City" takes us to an artificial world in which a mysterious force manipulates the memories of the inhabitants. The film combines noir elements with sci-fi and existential questions about identity, reality and control – and has striking parallels to "Matrix" in terms of content. An atmospherically dense thriller that has unjustly remained in the shadows.

Ex Machina (2015, director: Alex Garland)

Much quieter, but just as thought-provoking: "Ex Machina" is a minimalist, intense dialog film about artificial intelligence. A programmer tests a humanoid AI - but who is actually manipulating whom here? The philosophical depth and subtle tension make this film a modern take on the question: What is human? And can consciousness be created artificially?

Upgrade (2018, director: Leigh Whannell)

For all those who love action, body horror and high-tech: "Upgrade" combines a futuristic world with the story of a man who can walk – and fight – again after an attack with the help of an AI chip. The film shines with original fight scenes that are strongly reminiscent of "The Matrix", as well as a dark examination of control through technology.

Blade Runner 2049 (2017, director: Denis Villeneuve)

The sequel to the cult film "Blade Runner" picks up on many of the themes that also characterize The Matrix: artificial consciousness, identity, the nature of the soul. Ryan Gosling as replicant hunter K embarks on a journey that confronts him with questions about reality, memory and humanity. The visuals are breathtaking, the soundtrack hypnotic and the atmosphere denser than in most sci-fi films of recent years. Anyone who loves "The Matrix" for its blend of style and substance will get their money's worth here.

Conclusion

Those who love "Matrix" are usually looking for more than just action – it's about concepts such as freedom, identity and perception. The films presented here offer just that: food for thought and goosebumps at the same time. Whether you want to learn more about artificial intelligence, see stylized battles or simply dive deep into alternative realities, these films show: The Matrix is not alone.
