Karen Gillan: From Scotland to Hollywood: the most famous films of the versatile actress

Karen Gillan is one of the most exciting actresses of her generation. With her distinctive look, her versatility and a fine sense of humor and drama, she has earned herself a permanent place in Hollywood. She first became known for her role as Amy Pond in the cult British series "Doctor Who", but has since become a household name to audiences around the world thanks to major blockbuster franchises such as the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the "Jumanji" series. A look at her best-known films shows just how versatile Gillan is as an actress.

Guardians of the Galaxy (2014): The beginning of the Marvel universe

Karen Gillan's international breakthrough came with her role as Nebula in "Guardians of the Galaxy" by director James Gunn. For the role, she shaved her head and transformed herself into the cybernetic adoptive daughter of the mighty titan Thanos. Nebula was initially an antagonist, fighting alongside her sister Gamora (Zoe Saldaña) and other villains.

But Gillan gave the character depth and emotionality, making Nebula far more than a one-dimensional villain. Over the course of the Marvel films, her role developed into one of the most exciting character studies in the MCU.

Avengers: Infinity War (2018) & Avengers: Endgame (2019)

With the two "Avengers" mega-hits, Karen Gillan was able to deepen her role as Nebula even further. In "Infinity War" she played a central role in the conflict with Thanos, while "Endgame" brought her biggest screen presence in the MCU. Nebula became a tragic yet heroic figure who ultimately played a decisive role in the Avengers' victory.

The two films are among the most successful productions of all time, and Gillan became a star worldwide as a result. Her portrayal of Nebula remains one of the most remarkable performances in the Marvel cosmos to this day.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017)

Following her success in the MCU, Gillan showed her comedic side in 2017's "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle". Alongside Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart and Jack Black, she played the avatar character Ruby Roundhouse. The plot revolved around four teenagers who are drawn into a video game and fight for survival as adults in avatar bodies.

Gillan's role combined action, humor and self-irony – for example in scenes in which her character reflects on the absurdity of female video game outfits. The film was a worldwide box office success and introduced Gillan to a new, young audience.

Jumanji: The Next Level (2019)

The sequel seamlessly built on the success of its predecessor. Gillan returned as Ruby Roundhouse and was able to demonstrate even more action and martial arts this time. Here, too, she impressed with her comedic charm, which harmonized perfectly with the slapstick elements of Kevin Hart and Jack Black. With the two "Jumanji" films, Gillan has finally established herself as a bankable star in Hollywood. A third part is already being planned, in which she will reprise her role.

Gunpowder Milkshake (2021)

In "Gunpowder Milkshake", Gillan was finally able to take on a leading role in a stylish action film. She plays hitwoman Sam, who, after a job goes wrong, has to take on a whole army of enemies together with her estranged mother (Lena Headey). The film, visually heavily inspired by comic books, offered Gillan the opportunity to combine her action experience from Marvel and Jumanji with a stronger emotional story. Although reviews were mixed, Gillan was praised for her performance and physical presence.

Dual (2022)

With "Dual", Gillan proved her ability to shine in unusual indie productions. In the dark sci-fi satire film, she plays two roles at once: a terminally ill woman who creates a clone to relieve her family – and this same clone, who refuses to give up after her surprising recovery. Gillan mastered the challenge of playing two different versions of the same character and delivered one of her most impressive performances to date. Although the film was only shown in selected cinemas, it brought her a great deal of recognition on the independent scene.
