Denzel Washington is set to play the legendary general Hannibal! The Netflix film has been in development for quite some time. However, there had been little news about the project for a while – until now. Variety now reports that production is expected to begin in Italy in the summer of 2026. The outlet World of Reel specifically mentions June.

According to Variety, filming will take place at the famous Cinecittà Studios in Rome – the production site of classics such as "Ben Hur". Washington is teaming up with an old acquaintance: "Training Day" director Antoine Fuqua is to direct the historical epic. Washington and Fuqua have already worked together several times, including on the "Equalizer" films. The script, meanwhile, comes from John Logan. The multiple Oscar winner previously wrote the screenplay for Ridley Scott's "Gladiator".

The Carthaginian general Hannibal Barca is one of the most famous military strategists of antiquity. Above all, he became famous for his daring crossing of the Alps with elephants. During the Second Punic War between Rome and Carthage, Hannibal put the Romans under severe pressure on several occasions. The film adaptation now focuses on Hannibal and his decisive battles. However, it is still unknown when the Netflix film will be released. We'll keep you up to date!

Denzel Washington

Washington has been one of Hollywood's most influential actors for decades. His rise to superstardom began in the 90s. He starred in Spike Lee's civil rights drama "Malcolm X" and in the historical war drama "Glory", for which Washington won his first Oscar back in 1990. He later also shot the heist thriller "Inside Man" with Spike Lee.

A major highlight was his Oscar-winning role as a corrupt cop in "Training Day". Films such as "American Gangster" by Ridley Scott and the drama "Flight" also cemented his reputation as a versatile character actor. Washington has also worked with Ridley's brother Tony Scott on several occasions – whether in "Man On Fire" or "Deja Vu". Most recently, he was seen in Ridley Scott's "Gladiator 2" and Spike Lee's "Highest 2 Lowest".

Washington's partner of many years: Antoine Fuqua

Washington's collaboration with director Antoine Fuqua has been particularly successful in recent years. The "Equalizer" films are now among Washington's most successful action projects. Fuqua himself has also made a name for himself in Hollywood. In addition to "Training Day", he directed the action film "Olympus Has Fallen", the boxing drama "Southpaw" with Jake Gyllenhaal and the western remake "The Magnificent Seven", in which Denzel Washington once again took on the leading role. Fuqua's latest film will be released in cinemas in April: the Michael Jackson biopic "Michael".

Multiple Oscar-winner: Screenwriter John Logan

Hollywood veteran John Logan is one of the most renowned authors in the industry. He celebrated his breakthrough with the historical epic "Gladiator", which won Best Picture at the Oscars. Logan was also involved in the screenplays for films such as "The Aviator" by Martin Scorsese and the animated film "Rango". In the blockbuster sector, he also co-wrote the James Bond films "Skyfall" and "Spectre". He devoted himself to a historical film in "The Last Samurai" with Tom Cruise. In the series sector, he is known for the horror series "Penny Dreadful", which brought together classic characters from gothic literature in a dark Victorian world.

A combination of three Hollywood veterans

With this combination of star power in front of the camera, an experienced action director and an award-winning screenwriter, the planned "Hannibal" film is already one of the most exciting Netflix projects of the coming years. If production starts on schedule in summer 2026, it should soon become clear which other stars will be joining the historical epic.

A new historical film

In today's film landscape, major historical epics have become much rarer. However, in Classical Hollywood in particular, monumental material was one of the studios' most important prestige productions. Films such as "Ben-Hur" or Stanley Kubrick's "Spartacus" set standards with huge sets, mass scenes and elaborate costumes. At the beginning of the 2000s, the genre experienced another comeback – for example with "Gladiator" or productions such as "Troy" and "Kingdom of Heaven". Most recently, a new attempt was made to bring the genre back into the mainstream with "Gladiator 2". However, the late sequel fell short of many expectations. It will therefore be interesting to see how the "Hannibal" film is received by audiences.
