Cyberpunk: Edgerunners season 2 in the works
The first season is available on Netflix
Good news for all "Cyberpunk" fans: At this year's Anime Expo in Los Angeles, CD PROJEKT RED announced that a second season of the popular series "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners" is in the works.
In a livestream panel, storywriter and producer Bartosz Sztybor, voice actors Emi Lo and Zach Aguilar and presenter Joey "The Anime Man" Bizinger provided exciting insights into the creation of the acclaimed anime. A special highlight was the appearance of Hiroyuki Imaishi, director of the first season, who also shared his impressions. And the logo and a poster were even released to match.
Another surprise: director Hiroyuki Imaishi is handing over the reins for the second season to Kai Ikarashi, who has already been involved in a number of anime projects. In a recorded video message, Ikarashi presented his vision for the new anime and explained the ideas and themes that drive him.
"David's story might be over, but there's plenty more to discover in Night City. And to again have the legendary animation studio TRIGGER along for the ride makes us at CD PROJEKT RED so excited to introduce a raw, real chronicle of redemption and revenge, something unlike what we've done before."
"Edgerunners 2" will tell an intense story of redemption and revenge – and will be even darker and more uncompromising than its predecessor. Season 2 is currently in production and is being developed in close collaboration between CD PROJEKT RED and Studio TRIGGER. An exact release date has not yet been announced – but fans can already look forward to a thrilling return to Night City. You can watch the first season of "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners" on Netflix.
Netflix and the triumph of video game adaptations: Series hits for gamers and streaming fans
For a long time, video game adaptations were considered difficult terrain. All too often, films or series failed to capture the spirit of the games. However, Netflix has permanently changed this image and established itself as a pioneer for high-quality gaming series in recent years. Successes such as "Castlevania", "The Witcher", "Arcane" and "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners" laid the foundations – and in 2025 Netflix set the next milestone with "Devil May Cry".
Castlevania: the origin of the Netflix gaming boom
The first big Netflix success in the gaming segment was "Castlevania", which launched in 2017. The anime series is based on the legendary game series by Konami and was produced by Adi Shankar. After the first season, it was already clear that this series was different from previous adaptations. Brutal, dark, mature – "Castlevania" combined sophisticated storylines with atmospheric animation. Over the course of four seasons, "Castlevania" developed into a celebrated hit. The in-depth character development surrounding Trevor Belmont, Alucard and Sypha Belnades was particularly praised. The series managed to inspire both fans of the games and newcomers.
Netflix used the success to further expand the franchise. In 2023, the follow-up series "Castlevania: Nocturne" was released, which is set during the French Revolution and introduces Judge Belmont as a new protagonist. This series was also well received by critics and shows how long-lasting video game series can be if they are implemented correctly.
The Witcher: the fantasy flagship
Even though "The Witcher" is officially based on the novels by Andrzej Sapkowski, the Netflix series would hardly have become so successful without the popular games from CD PROJEKT RED. The game series made the witcher Geralt von Riva famous around the world – and Netflix made clever use of the hype.
Since the first season in 2019, 'The Witcher' has been one of the streaming service's biggest flagships. Henry Cavill, himself a passionate gamer, played Geralt convincingly and created a huge fan following. Despite wavering reviews in later seasons, the series remains a magnet for fantasy fans. In addition, spin-offs such as the anime "Nightmare of the Wolf" and the mini-series "Blood Origin" were released, further expanding the "Witcherverse".
Arcane: a masterpiece of animation art
A milestone in video game adaptations is Arcane, which is set in the League of Legends universe. The series, which launched in 2021, was developed by Riot Games together with Fortiche Production and set new standards. "Arcane" combines spectacular animation with an emotionally gripping story about the sisters Vi and Jinx. The complex narrative style, strong characters and artistic visuals delighted critics and viewers alike. The series won numerous awards, including an Emmy, and is considered one of the best animated series ever – far beyond the gaming world.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners: the dark anime success story
The next big hit followed in 2022 with "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners". The series, which is based on "Cyberpunk 2077", was developed in cooperation with Studio TRIGGER and tells an independent story in the dystopian world of Night City. "Edgerunners" was celebrated for its gripping plot, brutal action and tragic characters. Notably, the anime also helped the game make a comeback, as many viewers found their way back to "Cyberpunk 2077" after the series.
Devil May Cry: The latest hit in the Netflix gaming universe
In 2025, "Devil May Cry" celebrated its series debut on Netflix. The anime series is based on the popular action series from Capcom, in which demon hunter Dante fights monsters with sword and pistols. The series was produced by Adi Shankar, who had previously successfully adapted Castlevania.
The adaptation remains true to the roots of the original: stylish battles, black humor and the iconic coolness of Dante are the focus. At the same time, the series introduces new elements to make the story more accessible for fans of the series who are not familiar with the game. "Devil May Cry" was celebrated as a great success after just a few weeks – the action sequences and attention to detail were particularly praised. Many fans are now hoping for a second season.

Netflix's recipe for success: variety and quality
The success of Netflix gaming adaptations lies primarily in the variety and quality of the productions. Anime, animated series and live action – Netflix relies on different formats that are precisely tailored to the respective gaming universe. Another key to success is the close collaboration with the game developers and the creative freedom granted to the creators. Instead of mere retellings, independent works are created that are deeply rooted in the respective worlds and still tell new stories.
Conclusion: the golden era of gaming series has begun
Netflix has established itself as the market leader for video game adaptations in series format. With hits such as "Castlevania", "The Witcher", "Arcane", "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners" and the latest "Devil May Cry", the streaming service shows just how much potential there is in this material. Fans can look forward to even more: series on "Assassin's Creed", "Tomb Raider" and "Horizon Zero Dawn" have already been announced. Netflix thus remains the central player in the booming genre of gaming series – and the next success story is probably only a matter of time.
