Other actors from the original series could likewise return

J.D. returns! As we have known for some time, the popular sitcom "Scrubs" is getting a reboot. The series is currently in development at US broadcaster ABC. According to consistent media reports, Zach Braff, the main actor from the original series, will be back.

However, the new "Scrubs" series won't be a traditional reboot. The idea is rather to have a hybrid of revival and reboot. It will feature familiar characters but also introduce new ones.

Zach Braff as John Dorian

One of the familiar characters will be J.D. The main character was played by Zach Braff in each of the nine seasons of the original series. The actor has always remained associated with "Scrubs": together with Turk actor Donald Faison, he can be heard in the podcast "Fake Doctors, Real Friends". In the rewatch podcast, the two discuss all of the "Scrubs" episodes.

It is very likely that other actors from the original series will return as well. Deadline reports that those responsible for the reboot would also like to bring back Sarah Chalke (Elliot Reid), Donald Faison (Christopher Turk), Judy Reyes (Carla Espinosa) and John C. McGinley (Perry Cox). But there are likely to be a few more actors beyond that.

Back on board is series creator Bill Lawrence. This time, however, Lawrence is not involved as a showrunner but only as a producer. Most recently, he developed the Apple TV+ series "Shrinking" and "Ted Lasso".

Lawrence emphasized that he sees the hybrid of reboot and revival as the only sensible solution. On the one hand, he wants to tell what has become of the beloved characters. On the other hand, according to Lawrence, "Scrubs" has worked in the past because it showed young people in the world of medicine. A similar concept was already used in season 9 of the original series. However, most fans were dissatisfied with that season, though this can probably be attributed to a variety of reasons, not just the concept.

Right now, it is still unclear when we can expect the new "Scrubs" series. After all, it is still at an early stage of development. In the meantime, you can rewatch the original series: you can currently stream "Scrubs" on Hulu and Peacock.

Scrubs

The US series "Scrubs" is one of the most influential comedy series of the 2000s. Nine seasons were produced between 2001 and 2010, reaching a worldwide audience of millions. The series differs significantly from traditional medical shows such as "ER" or "Grey's Anatomy". "Scrubs" offers a unique blend of humor, fantasy and emotional depth.

Unusual Narrative Style

One of the most distinctive aspects of "Scrubs" is its narrative style: the series is told from the subjective perspective of the young doctor John "J.D." Dorian. His inner monologues, daydreams and fantasies are not only comical, but also provide deep insights into his world of thought. This style makes room for creative, often absurd interludes that lighten up the typical hospital routine.

Balance Between Comedy and Drama

Despite its comedy format, "Scrubs" has always dealt with serious topics – death, illness, psychological stress and moral dilemmas are all part of the show's repertoire. The series also manages to incorporate emotional moments between laughs without coming across as overly dramatic. The balancing act between comedy and drama is one of the series' biggest strengths.

Characters

Another reason for the show's success are the multi-faceted characters. In addition to the protagonist J.D., viewers quickly grow fond of characters such as Dr. Cox, the tough Carla, the quirky Janitor and the naive Turk. They are not one-dimensional characters, but evolve over the course of the series. The dynamic between them, especially the friendship between J.D. and Turk, provides the series with additional emotionality and authenticity.

Memorable Humor

The humor of "Scrubs" is diverse – from slapstick to puns. The daydream sequences in particular are a unique characteristic of the series. At the same time, the humor is often self-reflective and parodies the clichés of classic medical series.

Soundtrack

One of the series' major strengths is, of course, its varied soundtrack. For many fans, songs such as "How to Save a Life" by The Fray are synonymous with specific scenes and enhance their impact. The carefully selected music contributes significantly to the atmosphere of the series.

More Than a Simple Comedy Series

"Scrubs" was so popular because it was more than just a classic sitcom. The series knew how to address serious topics in an intelligent and creative way without losing any of its levity. The innovative narrative style, likeable characters, emotionally touching moments and the unmistakable humor made "Scrubs" a phenomenon that still has many fans, even years after the series ended – and is still gaining new ones. It is this unique combination that makes "Scrubs" unforgettable.
