Fourth Wing: Michael B. Jordan's Prime Video series officially announced
The series is based on Rebecca Yarros's hugely successful Empyrean novels
The news is finally confirmed: Oscar winner Michael B. Jordan's "Fourth Wing" series is becoming a reality. Prime Video has now officially greenlit the project. Jordan announced the news during Amazon's upfront presentation, as reported Variety.
The series is based on Rebecca Yarros's best-selling "Empyrean" novel series. "Fourth Wing" is the title of the first book. The new adult fantasy story centers on Violet Sorrengail. The protagonist is forced by her mother to attend Basgiath War College and become a dragon rider in the kingdom of Navarre. To do so, she must prove herself in deadly trials and competitions. She must also be wary of one of the most powerful riders: Xaden Riorson.
Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros: The start of a huge success
Rebecca Yarros's book series became a massive hit. The first novel, "Fourth Wing," was published in 2023 and went viral in the BookTok community on TikTok. But that's not all: the fantasy book topped the New York Times bestseller list, sold over two million copies within the first six months, and was translated into approximately 30 languages. The success continued: Shortly thereafter, the second novel, "Iron Flame," was published. The third volume, "Onyx Storm," followed in 2025 – and sold over 2.7 million copies within the first week. Fans can look forward to more installments: According to author Rebecca Yarros, the "Empyrean" series is set to comprise five books in total. However, the titles and release dates of the remaining novels have not yet been announced.
Michael B. Jordan clearly had a good nose for this when his production company, Outlier Society, secured the rights to the material a few years ago. Ideally, several seasons are planned, adapting the different novels from the "Empyrean" series. Jordan himself will be on board as an executive producer. According to the Hollywood star, however, the right team had to be assembled before production could begin. Author Rebecca Yarros is also set to be part of this team. Meredith Averill is serving as showrunner. Additionally, Lisa Joy has been brought on board for the planned series: The co-creator of the sci-fi series "Westworld" is set to direct the first episode of "Fourth Wing." She will also serve as an executive producer alongside Jordan, Elizabeth Raposo, Jonathan Nolan, Athena Wickham, Liz Pelletier, and Sherryl Clark.
We'll see Michael B. Jordan as an actor in Miami Vice '85
"Fourth Wing" isn't the only potential hit that Michael B. Jordan is co-producing. It was recently announced that he is set to serve as a producer on the planned film adaptation of the successful military video game "Battlefield." Whether he will also star in the film remains unknown. As an actor, however, he remains well-employed either way. Among other things, he has been cast as one of the lead actors in the new "Miami Vice" film. In "Miami Vice '85," Jordan will star alongside Austin Butler. True to its title, the reboot is set in the 1980s – the era of the original series. In the film directed by Joseph Kosinski, Jordan takes on the role of Ricardo Tubbs. Butler plays Sonny Crockett. As in the series, the two police officers are working undercover. Back then, the roles were played by Philip Michael Thomas and Don Johnson.
It will be interesting to see whether Michael B. Jordan will be as successful with this film as he was with "Sinners." In the vampire film, he played the dual role of the twins Elijah "Smoke" Moore and Elias "Stack" Moore. The film by director and screenwriter Ryan Coogler was not only a commercial success, grossing $370 million worldwide. In addition, "Sinners" won four awards at this year's Oscars – one of which went to Jordan for Best Actor.
