Ocean's 11 Prequel Starring Margot Robbie & Bradley Cooper Has Started Filming
The Cast and Release Date for the Heist Movie Are Already Known
A new "Ocean's" movie is on the way! The cast of the still-untitled prequel is already known and features several high-profile names. Now, the production is taking a major step forward: Filming has begun! Actor Wagner Moura revealed this in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
"They're already shooting it. I'm doing a play here in Europe, and as soon as I wrap that, I'm going to join them."
The casting of the "Narcos" star was only revealed in June. The actor, who portrayed Pablo Escobar, wouldn't reveal which character he'll be playing. He said he's playing a role he can't talk about at this time. There is speculation that he has been cast as the film's antagonist.
Lead Actors & Plot of the Prequel
The film's lead roles will be played by "Barbie" star Margot Robbie and Bradley Cooper. It's assumed they'll play the parents of Danny Ocean (George Clooney in the main movies). At CinemaCon 2026, a video was presented in which Margot Robbie revealed the first details about the plot:
"Before Danny Ocean ever stepped foot in Vegas, two masterminds taught him everything he knows – his parents. You'll see them in their prime, and in our new movie, pulling off an epic heist at the 1962 Monaco Grand Prix."
The cast of the prequel is already known beyond Cooper, Robbie and Moura as well. Also joining the cast are Monica Barbaro ("Top Gun: Maverick"), Josh Gad ("Frozen"), Omar Sy ("The Intouchables"), Vicky Krieps ("The Phantom Thread"), George MacKay ("1917"), Lauren Ridloff ("The Walking Dead"), and Jack Holden ("Journey's End").
When will the prequel hit theaters?
Bradley Cooper isn't just on board as an actor—he'll also be directing the film. He co-wrote the screenplay with Carrie Solomon and Charles Randolo. The release date for the prequel has already been announced: On June 25, 2027, you'll be able to see the prequel to the "Ocean's" series in theaters.
Ocean's 14: A Sequel Is Also in the Works
But it's not just a prequel that's set to revive the "Ocean's" franchise: a sequel is also in the works. The original stars from Steven Soderbergh's films are even set to return for it. We're talking about George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Don Cheadle, and Andy Garcia. Clooney has already hinted to Variety that while the characters aren't exactly young anymore, they apparently still have a lot to offer for another heist:
"We're too old to do what we used to do, but we're still smart enough to know how to get away with something."
"Deadpool 2" director David Leitch could take the director's chair. Most recently, a start date of October 2026 was being discussed. However, it is not yet known whether this schedule can be met or when "Ocean's 14" is set to hit theaters.
The Ocean's Movies
With his remake of "Ocean's 11," Soderbergh gave a well-known story a modern twist and put a new generation of stars in the spotlight. Alongside Clooney, the ensemble cast included Brad Pitt as Rusty Ryan, Matt Damon as Linus Caldwell, and Julia Roberts as Tess Ocean. Don Cheadle, Elliott Gould, and Andy García were also part of the star-studded cast.
The huge success of "Ocean's Eleven" quickly made it clear that it wouldn't end with a single heist. The first sequel, "Ocean's Twelve," followed as early as 2004. In it, Danny Ocean and his team head to Europe. Alongside the familiar faces, Catherine Zeta-Jones, among others, joined the cast.
In 2007, "Ocean's Thirteen" concluded the original trilogy. Once again, Clooney, Pitt, Damon, and the rest of the cast appeared together on screen, this time as the group returned to Las Vegas. With Al Pacino, the third installment also gained a particularly prominent antagonist. This seemed to bring the story of Danny Ocean and his crew to a close—at least for the time being.
However, the franchise wasn't quite over yet. In 2018, "Ocean's 8" expanded the universe to include a new group of master thieves. Sandra Bullock took on the lead role as Debbie Ocean, playing Danny Ocean's sister. She was joined by Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Sarah Paulson, Rihanna, Helena Bonham Carter, and Mindy Kaling, among others.
Now, the universe is set to expand twice over with the "Ocean's" prequel and "Ocean's Fourteen." It will be interesting to see if the upcoming projects can build on the franchise's earlier successes.
